Hey, we’re staying in L.A. for the 1986 song as well. The “L.A. mellow rock” sound was very popular in the 70s. That popularity waned in the 80s in favor of hair bands
but the acts were still releasing music. And here’s one from one of my favorites…such a favorite that he’s on both the 40-year-old AND 50-year-old lists.
Lawless Avenues - Jackson Browne
Remember reading The Outsiders in school? Or seeing West Side Story? Gangs are part of popular culture, as they are part of life. Not the “cliques” of high school, but gangs. The kids you don’t want to meet in a dark alley.
Well, that’s what this song is about: gangs in Los Angeles. You assume Mexican, because part of the song is in Spanish and some of the people mentioned have Latino names. It doesn’t matter, though: “Silent Joe” is dead (“stabbed in the chest, he went down swinging”).
Gee, I’m going for the violent and depressing songs this month, aren’t I?
Sorry. I was a little turned off by Jackson Browne’s deep dive into politics with this album (not that he hadn’t been subtly political before: the brilliance of “Before the Deluge,” about environmentalism). I thought — and still think — that he was so focused on the message that the music suffered. But I fell in love with this song immediately. I still love it.

That's fair, Rancid's approach is always best. They take sneaky shots and it never hurts the music but helps you remember why they do it. Whether you agree or not, you respect it Why I always liked them over NOFX and then you have Pennywise who just this is just the way we do things and we do not care what you think. I love that approach too.

@FourWalls True, know why you believe what you believe, but also there is another side and know why you believe what you believe based on what you have seen. A lot of people base their hate and disagreement on things they never even experienced. At least all three bands I named based their beliefs on their life and what they experienced and seen. That is a big difference than my mom said or my friend said.

I think the shock for Jackson was he went from those soul-searching, introspective songs to “Reagan sucks.” Imagine if the Clash had done the opposite!

You on American Bandstand: “Pretty lame beat, you can’t dance to it, and ick, it has lyrics!”

That was Van Morrison (and later Jimmy Buffett covering) who did “Brown Eyed Girl.” Jackson’s eyeball song was “Doctor My Eyes.”

Most of his success was in the 70s. No apologies needed. (Oh, some trivia for you: his dad was stationed in Germany when he was born!)

@FourWalls Really? I only know that Elvis Presley was stationed in the army in Germany before.

Don't know this one. I wish I could remember the name of the guy or song that I liked so much. It had a regular version and a long version. The guy played the piano..Oh shoot!

A long way from something introspective like “Looking Into You.”

We all have our own emotional reactions to music.

Indeed. Definitely not a “happily ever after” tune.
