A number of athletes at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics have their service/guide dogs travelling with them. One of these is Dave Miln from Australia. In 2022, while in a ski trip to northern California, he was carrying his on-year-old daughter and guiding his three-year-old when they encountered a large snow removal machine. He slipped and turned his body towards the blades to protect his daughters. The eldest received broken legs and pelvis and Miln had spinal fractures along with other injuries. He eventually had his left leg amputated above the knee and his right below the knee. The family of four all suffer from post traumatic stress disorder and their service dog Suki is an integral part of helping them negotiate their day-to-day lives. Suki, a golden labrador, escaped from a cabin while Dave was competing and went up on the snow. When people tried to catch her, she ad an attack for of the zoomies. Good for Suki. The photo is of our friend’s chocolate labrador.

I am so sorry for what happened to this family. This kind of accidents will forever brings back to my memory when one of my school friends was killed (in Cortina) by a snow removal machine. She was only 6, a beautiful blonde little girl.

@JudyEv - It seems that my little friend had to pee, she hide in a corner and the machine moved backward and the driver could not see her. Poor thing. For months I did not arrive to sleep, because the nuns had the bad idea to tell us "she went to sleep and never woke up".

Oh, that is so sad. It must have been touch and go for this family too. Does the driver not see people in front of the machine? I know nothing about snow removal machines. How do you think the accident happens?

Sweet Suki for helping that poor family. My son’s cat, Pitchou gets the zoomies every night.

Labs can be so very funny especially when they want to run and play. Beautiful chocolate lab.
