Do you remember free milk at school ?

Okay, so I am going back over 50 years now, but when I was at school we used to have free milk every day. It was in little glass bottles and a silver foil lid, that we had to poke the straw through. I loved it. It was ice cold when we had it in the morning. If there was any left at the end of the day and it was brought round the classrooms I was always first with my hand up for extras. I still have a drink of milk every night before I go to bed. Milk is one of my favourite drinks. Do you remember the free milk at school ? Do you still drink milk today ?

I remember little cartons of milk. I stopped drinking milk, but I have half-and-half with coffee which has milk in it. I would buy goat milk, but it’s very expensive. Maybe I’ll make an exception and buy regular milk and buy some chocolate chip cookies to go with it. I don’t really drink milk by itself.

@Traceyjayne I found it a bit odd that the only thing you could get to drink for free was milk. Milk and hamburgers don’t particularly go well together.

@lovebuglena 50 plus years ago here we didn’t really have burger places. It wasn’t the sort of food we had at school either.

We had small cardboard cartons of milk at school. I can't drink real cow milk now. I'm lactose intolerant. If I drink "milk" or eat it with cereal, I prefer almond milk.

@Traceyjayne Yes, Pretty bought pea milk and it tasted weird and curdled when I tried to cook with it.

@DaddyEvil I thought it tasted weird too. I had loads free but I gave it to my friend for the food bank. I never tried cooking with it.

We didn’t have that, but I went to a private school. Public schools are more apt to do that. Ice cold milk sounds really good right now. It actually sounds delicious. I recently started drinking milk again in an effort to get more protein in my diet.

@traceyjayne I remember it well and with fondness. When I eventually became minister of a Church when I was about 32, on the first Sunday I stood up in the pulpit and right in front of me was my P1 teacher and I could see her supervising the milk.

I remember it being three cents. I don't remember free. That was in grade school. Then in high school we had chocolate milk or iced tea options and it was 35 cents.

There was a time when the milk in schools had to be paid for….it was 1p a day. Now it is free for all children from 3 years to 7 years old.
