Orcas off the coast of Western Australia

Tomorrow, Vince’s brother is travelling to the tiny of hamlet of Bremer Bay on Western Australia’s south coast to join a boat tour. About 65 kilometres (40 miles) out to sea is the Bremer Canyon, a deep-sea cleft 5000-metres (3 miles) deep. Somewhere between early January and mid-April, the area teems with sea-life, proving an irresistible drawcard for killer whales or orcas.
Since full-day boat tours to the area first started, 150 individual orcas have been identified and recorded with more to come. A hydrophone hooked to the boat records whale chatter. The orcas may be in stealth mode for up to an hour then suddenly 100 orcas come from every direction and the feeding frenzy begins.
The tour operator says the best way to see the orcas is to watch the sky for birds. They circle and dive around the pods, cleaning up the debris. Bird-watchers are also attracted to the area as shearwaters, giant petrels and wandering albatross frequent the area.
Those going on the tour have been advised to take tablets to guard against sea-sickness.

When we go to British Columbia, which is on our west coast, next month, the rest of the family is going whale watching. They go out too far for me to join them, but I insisted that they go. I have to be able to see the shoreline from a boat or else the nausea sea bands that I wear on my wrists do not stop the motion sickness. I hope that they have a sighting, even if they do not, the sea lions are quite often spotted, and the girls will love to see those. Otherwise the children cannot be out on deck, someone will need to stay inside with them, I'm sure that they will take turns doing that.

Orcas are beautiful and I'd love to see them in the wild. I hope your Brother-in-law has a fun tour.

@JudyEv Probably... I wouldn't be able to handle the sun all day. I burn in 15 minutes in direct sunlight. I hope he took some good sunscreen along.

@DaddyEvil I should think he'd be well-covered up but perhaps it will be hot. I'm sure he'd have sunscreen. We burn much more quickly than we ever used to. I think it is due to the depleted ozone layer.

Whenever I hear the word orca I am reminded of the movie I watched with my cousin when we were kids. It was Orca the Killer Whale. It was the one and only time I watched it and never watch the movie again.

@JudyEv I felt sad when I watched it though. But it wasn't an amazing film that I'd enjoy watching over and over again. It was my cousin's choice to watch it.

I would just love to take a boat cruise and see orcas or dolphins and other kinds of whales, even seals.

@JudyEv I wouldn't enjoy it either if I got seasick.

I thought I saw an Orca here on the Moray Coast last year when we were on holiday
But it was a dolphin dressed as a nun

How cool that would be. We saw whales off the coast of northern California and on a boat tour off the east coast.
