United States Postal Service is almost out of money.

They are claiming that they may run out of money to function with, possibly late this year says some sources, and within a year from others. Either way, they are in a mess.
Also, there are plans to raise the price of stamps again, to the .90-.95 cent per stamp range. Currently, stamps are .78 cents each. They also mentioned they could cut services and not deliver 6 days a week. That I could handle, as could most people. Four or five days is plenty.
They also claim the reason they are out of money is that there are a lot less people even using mail services now. Well, I can see that, as we often email or text rather than send mail. The big question most people have on the issue of them needing more funds to function is, will it actually help the mail service be better than it is now? As I have said before, the Pony Express was more efficient than our current mail service is.
If there was no mail service at all, it would be a huge problem for some people--I know that we think ''Oh, everyone is online now'' but that's not true. There are people who are not, elderly, etc. or lack of funds. There are also people who will never pay a bill online, they flatly refuse or they are just afraid to.

Postal service here has only been working for official mails. Those mails are registered mails done for legal purposes mostly. Businesses do the online thing now, sending out bills online or through their business app. People hardly ever use the snail mail coz they get lost anyway.

@MarieCoyle They're still existing and you can use I to communicate but if you want a safe way to do so, use a registered mail. If you want it faster, use a private courier which doesn't use postage stamps.

Wow...which means if your country would lose it's internet access for some reason, there is really no way to communicate. I know that snail mail has ways of disappearing, it happens here often.

I have had to send several sets of important documents out for my son. The way the mail has been so erratic, never arrives, etc. I have sent them 3 different times via registered mail so they had to be signed for. Expensive, but they DID arrive at their destination!

The service can't be any worse if they go less days

Sad when I think about it. They used to have such strict standards and they had to be followed or you were gone. Now, they just want a body. Any old body, I think.

The joke here is if you are sober enough to stand and walk, they will hire you. Evidently knowing how to read is not a requirement!

For me it wouldn't be any love loss if they did. It'd be one less day for checking the snail mail. And it would be one less day to recieve those annoying adverts trying to buy my house. Although, I doubt this is valid. I doubt usps is really running out of money. and going to a five day a week schedule wouldn't cut costs, not by much. Not enough to really resolve the so-called money issues anyway. Parts of usps still run on a 24/7 schedule, so unless they're cutting jobs too I don't see how that'd actually work. But, I guess we'll see.

Actually, cutting one day of service per week would save between 3 to 3.5 billion dollars a year. So if they would cut back to a 4 day week, that's 7 billion per year, which isn't chump change.I know that many people feel the entire USPS system just needs to be rebuilt and reorganized from the ground up. Maybe it will happen, I guess time will tell.

Canada Post is in the same predicament.
Their workers strike and want more and more benefits, pension and income, yet the service is used less and less and therefore it generates less revenue.
Our stamps, just to send within Canada are $1.07, don't even ask me how much it is to send to your country, I believe it was around 2 dollars the last time that I purchased a stamp.

@MarieCoyle Back when our son was away at university, our post office offered a great service that I used about every 3 weeks.
They sold a plastic type of bag, which you could stuff full of items, and seal and drop into a mail box and have delivered in a day.
I remember sending him new socks in those, licorice for when he was studying for exams, a little bit of cash and gift cards. It was insured and arrived the next day.
It helped out when you had someone so young away from home so far without a vehicle.

We never had a service like that here, that would have been just wonderful. I know I would have used it!

The cost of mailing any type of boxes out of the post office is simply ridiculous. I think that's one of the big reasons so many people use Amazon--they can just buy it and ship it to whoever.

I honestly think they pretty much have to keep the US Mail going somehow. It's just too vital.

I need snail mail to be delivered to my home since I receive either important mail or packages.

They need someone to come in and clean up this mess. There is a way to fix this if someone really wanted to. I’m fine with mail five days a week, but like you said, people need to use their services. Way too many people still pay bills that way, and it’s not unreasonable to expect that to continue.

You are right, many people pay their bills using mail services. They never should have let it get in such a snarl!!

Great! Isn't the Postmaster General supposed to be on top of this stuff? Why don't they use AI more? It couldn't be any worse than the human sorters!

And since it's more than obvious, at least in my own area and some others I have heard of, that the sorters can't read, anyway!

My union steward said, in 1991, that the post office lost a million customers with every penny the price increases. And that was before ubiquitous emails. I honestly look for Amazon to take over the job. They’re proving they can deliver quickly and accurately!

I know it has been discussed more than once that Amazon could take it over. I'm sure there would be hiccups at first, but it couldn't possibly be a lot worse than it is right now.

They need to clean up the mess and not raise stamp prices. It is high enough.

Some people rely on it daily, or they are not online, etc. We do need some type of postal service. Preferably, one that actually works!

It's ironic that you wrote about this because I just ordered a roll of stamps today and heard that they would be raising the prices again. No way I say!! I also heard about the USPS being in dire straits for cash and it's so crazy when the whole mail delivery is horrible.

It's just so frustrating. I hope somehow it's all fixable, but I have to wonder if that's just a dream.

Profit is in parcels but they are lumbered with the responsibility of non profit letter delivery. Same in the UK

True, but they often can’t even deliver an in-state letter or package in 2 weeks time. It’s insane.
