Un-retirement is really a thing. Silver surge is on the way.

And no, the silver surge I am referring to isn't about blocks of silver. Over the years I have lived here, I have gotten to know some of my neighbors. About half of them are seniors or will soon be seniors. There are some families, both younger and older. I chat with one lady sometimes, she is 78. Not the best health, but not the worst. She beat cancer twice. She's outlived most of her family. She called me last night--she is looking for a part time job. Her social security just doesn't stretch far enough, with the rising costs of everything, she feels she needs to work again to have some food security and tackle the constant hikes of the cost of utilities, etc. She told me that she has several senior friends, all close to 80, that are actively looking for work. I thought about this off and on after her call. I am not sure why I am surprised. Pretty much everyone I know here seems to fall in two categories--they either have plenty, or they don't have much. So watch out...you may be waited on by a senior clerk or see more of them working somewhere if they can find a position that works for them. Kudos to them if they have the stamina and the health to do this.

It's very sad that people can't afford to relax and enjoy their later years anymore.

It really makes the saying “the golden years are not so golden “ hit home.

@MarieCoyle Yes it does. And it's not the ones that spend frivolously either anymore.

@wolfgirl569 You are right, it's not. They need grocery money, not trinkets and doodads.

I was so glad when I finally took an early retirement. I was lucky to have worked there only five years and was given a small pension. With rising prices, I can see where many seniors feel the need to work. I couldn't do it. I hope they are able to find work. So many places don't want to hire older folks.

I fully understand. And they’ll usually be the first people hired because (a) they have experience, (b) they have a work ethic missing in Generation Z, and (c) they’re cheaper because they don’t tap into company insurance (since they’re on Medicare).

Sad to have to go back to work when those people should relax and enjoy their retirement. We are not living nice times. I remember when I was young and seniors stayed at home and were served by their children.

If I had better health I could be out there being a home health aide again. Not doing that. I'm home trying to find somebody to help me walk the dogs.

My 83 year old mother in law worked part time up until two months ago when we had to put her in an Alzheimer's facility.
