Have you ever been robbed, or had a break-in?

A friend texted me today. She lives in a suburb of Indianapolis. I've been to her home; it's a nice home in a nice neighborhood. But last night, she heard a noise and got up and heard a car screech away. The side window of her car was completely smashed. There was nothing in the car to steal but her jacket, so they took that. She always parks in her garage, but she didn't park there last night, because her husband is remodeling one of their bathrooms. He had some flooring and tile, etc. delivered that day and stacked in the garage, so she couldn't park in her usual spot. My friend felt invaded, and sad. She thought their neighborhood was safe as nothing had ever happened. Hopefully, it isn't something that will happen again, but of course, one never knows.
I guess I have been lucky, not anything terrible has happened in the way of being robbed or my property damaged. I was robbed at gunpoint once. It was a late evening, I managed a restaurant at the time. Almost closing time, and only a very few people left inside. I was helping the cashier catch up on her work, when 2 men came in, approached us, and pulled guns. They wanted our money. One handed me a bag to put the money in. I gave him everything, down to the change. There was several thousand dollars in the till.
I thought they would run out...we were shaking and it was so stressful and I was truly struggling to stay calm. The one with the money said, I know you have a big cooler or a freezer, take me there. So what do we do, I mean...they have guns.
The walk in freezer was stuffed full of foods as we had a delivery that day. The cooler, not so full. He made me, the cashier, and the remaining kitchen staff all go in the cooler and he locked us in. We didn't hear anything after that. We were there in the cold dark for about an hour? Just guessing on that. The police showed up and found the building unlocked after closing time, lights all on, cars outside. We heard them, even before they discovered us in the cooler and got us out of there. We were all very cold, but we were not hurt--just still terrified.
We found out from the police later that these two robbed a gas station later that same night and were caught. They locked the gas station employee in the beer cooler.
One place that I lived, my garage was broken into once, and an attempt was made to hot wire my car. They had no success. I think I was very lucky in both instances, for sure.
Have you been robbed? How did you feel if it happened to you?

I wish we had not been there when the robbery took place. I think after it was all over, I realized I shook for two days. I completely understand not wanting to talk about it. Glad you weren't home!!

By the time we were in the cooler for an hour, we were all hugging each other and waving our hands and trying to get warm!! I think we were cold from the temperature AND the fear!!
We were very happy to see the police!!

I have been robbed and we had a break in in Milan, our first apartment soon after we were married.
Well as I was attacked when I have been robbed, I was shocked, I was thrown on the pavement, I hit my heat and I was unconscious for several minutes, so it was a terrible experience.
Getting inside your apartment and finding all your belongings on the floor was also a terrible shock. I refused to live there another day. We immediately moved.

@MarieCoyle - Sadly our apartment was robbed and my fur stolen with the cameras of my husband and other precious objects. I almost never wore my diamond when we traveled, that time I decided to wear it. For sure I saved it!

Those thieves were going for the expensive items. And yes, you were fortunate indeed that you decided to wear your diamond that day, too.

Some kids when through our roof and it was aimed at one of our tenants. Too bad the roof was cement. So, they went for the neighbor's instead.

My car was stolen and then abandoned. Someone broke into my in-laws' house when we were cleaning it out and stole some items. Our rental was broken into a couple of times too. I thank God that no one has broken into my home. I'm sorry for your experience.

That’s a lot of break-ins to deal with. I’m not sure how I would feel if someone broke into my home. That would really shake anyone up

Yes, years ago our house was broken into. No one was home at the time, and they took a lot-appliances, money, even food. Then years later, there was another attempt, but they only made it as far as the yard because we woke up, so they didn’t get inside the house.
Your experience sounds really terrifying, especially being locked inside like that. I’m just glad you were all safe in the end-that’s what really matters though it's really something you'll never forget and carry for years. That's traumatic!

Oh, I feel a home invasion would be the worst! No one wants to have their house burglarized!!
No, we never forget these experiences. But we do have to move forward and keep on trying. It scared me and I’m sure it scared you to find what they did and that they were in your home, I’m glad that we are both still around to cause trouble!!

Not personally robbed like by a person confronting me, but my car was broken into and my cell phone and some loose change was stolen back around 1996.

That was bad enough. I hate it when I hear of these things happening.

Well, you know I was robbed of my packages in front of my apartment last year. They picked an expensive day, and got about $450 worth of stuff. I was very upset and hurt. Mostly mad, though.
And, someone broke into my car a couple of years ago, but the joke was on them. My car had nothing inside for them to steal.
I can’t believe you were robbed at gunpoint. That’s so scary!

I remember the package theft. I know you were fairly positive it was your strange neighbor. That was just mean.
I never leave anything in my car worth stealing. I remember once my sister left her purse in her car and just took her wallet with her. She put the purse in the back seat and locked the car. She came back to a broken window and a stolen purse. That thief didn’t get much.

Yes my house was robbed when I was only married a few years, I thought we lived in a good neighborhood but came home and found out house has been robbed, everything was tossed, stuff was stolen and they came through a side window. The only thing not tossed was the babys room. It was totally untouched, We moved shortly thereafter but they never found out who did it, Even now I can get a feeling of apprehension when I think about it

Thank goodness that my relatives and myself have never been robbed even though one auto that was owned by my relatives had the front windows smashed.
