It's burning

I do not know why they do it at night, but the fire department appears to be doing a practice exercise. They are burning the field across from me. I saw the blazes last night, on the side furthest from me. Tonight they are half way across the field. I wonder if tomorrow they will be burning close to the street. There are several reasons that they do this, but they do not do it every year. It is a good way to practice their containment skills. It eliminates fire hazards, by burning them in controlled circumstances. Burning clears out invasive species growing in the fields. Other years there have been crops of hay grown in the field and they cut it. I do know that by Memorial Day weekend the field will be green and grassy and ready for the campers who come for the Motorcycle Grand Prix. I am not really wild about the smell of smoke drifint into our house, though.

I do not blame you for being upset over the awful smell from fires.

All the local fire departments practice their training over in Monett and Cassville training ground and several parks that they purposely allow to overgrow in the fall and then train in the spring. Supposedly, they did that last night in Cassville according to Fakebook. I wouldn't like it if they did that close to us but I know they could use the Aurora Airport as a training area some time, which is right behind our house. (I haven't seen them do that yet...)

I have seen when wildfires take off in overgrown fields, so I am glad they manage it this way. It looked eerie the one night, but it was clear across the field at the other highway.

@GardenGerty I've only seen fires somebody set on purpose so far. Mostly, dad burning off our farm when I was a kid. But he had an army of kids to keep watch so the fire didn't go onto the farms beside us.

It clears up pretty well. At least it is the smell of grass burning and not something yucky like garbage or chemicals.

They might figure it is better to do the burn at night.

I think there is less wind. Also, if it is dark the spots that are still hot will glow and they can see them.

I don't mind the smell as long as it doesn't get too strong.

The smell of smoke is okay for a short while, maybe even pleasant, but it permeates everything.

If you did not know where it was coming from it would be scary.. Bob woke up because he could smell toast toasting this morning.
