Working behind the bar

Before we married, Vince worked in a bank in a very isolated town. He stayed in the pub during his time there. The hotel owner persuaded him to work in the bar after hours. He pointed out that, as Vince would spend his leisure hours in the pub anyway, he might as well spend the time working behind the bar. He’d still meet old friends and new, he wouldn’t drink as much and would earn money instead of spending it. Vince enjoyed the work, for all the reasons that the boss had given. The photo shows the hotel which is very typical of country hotels of the time.

He enjoyed working behind the bar. It was very social, all his friends were drinking there so it was a happy time for him. He got along well with the owneer and when the bar was shut for the night, the staff had a quiet drink together.

I like the country vibe of the structure. And yes it is a very good idea for him to work behind the bar. He can be social and earn at the same time.

He would have drunk more and spent more so this was a good option.

That may have been where he gained so much of his social attributes that he seems to possess. My husband worked the bar at the Canadian - Belgium/Dutch Club. His family served on the board, and his last name was very well known there. It taught him responsibility, as he had to cut patrons off on occasion, and call them a cab. He also enjoyed watching the elderly play archery in the club as well as another game, similar to shuffleboard, but done in a U shaped trough that they stood in and the disks were rolled on their sides. He loved working the pool and darts tournaments, they were fun and he enjoyed watching the great ones show off their talent.

I'm sure the experience was good for him (Vince). I can understand that your husband would have enjoyed his time in the Club. They both would have learnt a lot about human nature and how to handle people.

Country hotels alway seem to be built on a corner. Maybe it gives them more parking space.

@JudyEv - This is very possible and they are seen from people coming from two different roads.

Yes, it did. He would have drunk more and spend more if he hadn't gone behind the bar.

The hotel was the centre of social interaction in that town.

@JudyEv I love the look of that hotel. It reeks of old fashioned charm and closely resembles one where we used to stay in Lorenzo Marques, Mozambique, in the late 60s.

Many of the older country hotels look similar. I have photos of others but I can't access them until I get home again.

The Mister and I have said we would like our own pub ....maybe when the day time jobs are a thing of the past ...and we can move somewhere sunny and warmer than England.

This one has fallen on hard times in a way as mining in the area has stopped and the population has fallen.

That doesn't look like a pub, but I would not complain if I got beverages ot my choice there.
