Pineberry Plants Going In

White Strawberry just planted

These are a fun type of strawberry called Pineberry (white strawberry), and many think they are unripe but that is the color they are when ripe. They need a buddy, so we have both red and white strawberries mixed and already a bunch of runners and tiny strawberries are forming. When they are ripe, they are pale white with red seeds. Since they are white, birds overlook them. We still have to fight the wild bunnies, so these are in tall raised wooden planters. Washington has a lot of wild strawberries but you rarely get to pick them with all the critters getting to them first. These white variety are from South American and brought back into popularity in recent years. Other than planting our roses, jasmine, fig/apple/ and cherry trees, Irish moss, mums and a few other plants and trees, these are the first of anything edible. Still a lot to get done but feels so nice to see a bit of landscaping beginning. On the 17th, I go to get stitches out and mentioned I will pick up a couple tomato and peppers. My son gave me the look since he has about 20 inside growing in the hdro-whatever it's called thing and he needs to transplant outside. Do you have a garden yet?

It sounds you will have quite an impressive grouping wherever one happens to look! My dad’s wife is an avid gardener, and she already had some lovely daffodils bloom. It was such a pretty sight. She’s got a lot left to see come to fruition though.

We get a lot of wild daffodils in Washington. When I lived in Oregon, we did there as well. We have a lot of work to do, but working a bit as we go.

Those strawberries sound awesome to me. It’s too soon for me to garden, and it will have to wait until I return to Connecticut. But I did see from a photo my son sent that some shrubs are in bloom. Can’t wait to get back!

We won't have a lot this year due to the ongoing land building, but we will have strawberries, tomatoes, peppers and forgot what else he has going. Next year, we should have a major garden up on the top pad where the travel trailers are right now. Those are getting moved today or tomorrow.

@DianneN The last time we had a huge garden was a couple years ago and we donated a lot to the food bank.

@noni1959 I would love a huge vegetable garden, but my little one serves the purpose. As it is, I have to give most of it to friends, family, and neighbors. There’s just so much 2 people can eat.

It is a very healthy looking plant, I hope that it yields you plenty of fruit. I don't have anything planted, we still get frost at night here.

When we get home from house-sitting the weather will be much more conducive to gardening. I'm getting keen about planting more plants. I need things that aren't affected by chilli thrip. It must be very satisfying to have some many plants starting to take shape.

I never heard of this. I'll look it up. It's possibly a different name I know. What do you mostly like to grow?

@JudyEvI looked it up and yes, I know these pests. I knew them as dorsalis. They are here in Washington and like the plants my son has. We use sticky cards to monitor pets and there are so many ladybugs that come out in May and June on this property so hoping that will help control them. My son has been reading about the different treatments and such. We haven't seen them yet, but preparing.

@noni1959 I don't know if you've heard of chilli thrip but it's prevalent here and almost impossible to deal with. It can't be eradicated, just controlled so I'll be planting the few flowering plants that it doesn't seem to like. There aren't many vegies that are exempt either so it will be vincas, petunias, gazanias mostly.

That is a nice photo. My son just bought a fig tree. It's going to be interesting where he puts a lot of the trees here. We are on a bit over three acres but there are a lot of pine, cedar and alder.

How is your garden going? We have so much cloud cover here, it takes awhile to get a harvest. We have been picking strawberries.

I had white strawberries in my garden, but I found that the taste was less intense than regular strawberries. I had also some plants of small wild strawberries, those are the best.

@noni1959 - The birds got to my strawberries sometimes, but I placed feeders with seeds to "distract" them. I never arrived to eat our figs, the birds always served themselves first.

@LadyDuck My son has bird feeders out and we fight the chipmunks. I told my son he has his work cut out for him on this property. With elk, deer, bear, wild bunnies, possum, skunks, chipmunks, squirrel, coyote, and mt. Lions, I have no idea how he is going to be on top of having chickens, goats, and his garden. It will be interesting.

The wild are so good and sweet. We have wild bunnies all around the PNW and they usually get to them first.

It sounds like you will have a good productive garden. The garden plot for the complex has started. It shouldn't be long before I see plants in the raised garden.

Our strawberries are doing great even after the freezing. We have them in raised up planter boxes bunnies can't get to.

I had never heard of pineberry before, and when I saw the picture, I thought "Those look like strawberry leaves", so it made sense when I read about them being a kind of strawberry. The white fruit with red seeds sounds neat!

Hi. Loretta. As usual, you sound busy and productive. Daughter and son-in-law planted some pineberries last year in with their strawberries. They are starting to come up and form tiny berries, hopefully there will be no more frosts or freezes to hurt the berries. I have my tiny garden spot ready, but it's still a bit too early here. We are always advised to not plant before Mother's Day. I often cheat and plant seeds a bit early but I try to hold off on the tomatoes, etc. It seems more and more people are planting gardens, or at least some vegetables here and there, than I have seen before since I've lived here. But I do have it ready to plant, which for me, is something!

You sound ready to go. I love it. My son begun his plants indoors this year and many are ready to go out. We were up on the top pad where the trailers were (got them moved a couple days ago), and was doing some clean up and planning. The green house will get moved when I get back from Oregon so I can help and he'll bring all the inside plants into there for awhile. We had a couple more freezers but the strawberries made it and have little berries.

@MarieCoyle It's not easy to be patient for sure. So far, other than a lot of rain again, our weather is mild in the day and cool at night. We have been picking strawberries.

@noni1959 We are hopefully done with the freezes and/or frosts here. But we have been surprised before and I hate to take a chance with baby plants, so I always try to be patient. Not always easy!
