Spring Walk

My Saturdays are usually walking days, as I get groceries and I walk alot in the store and the parking lot, with putting away my cart and whatnot. Today after I arrived home and my husband put the groceries away, I had to return a text message that I received around 9am this morning. My son texted me that both of the girls (Harper sleeps in until then) were up and asking for Nanny. So, although I enjoy sitting down with him and chatting after groceries, today I had to head back out the door. It is a beautiful, sunny wind-less, rain-less, snow-less spring day here. The skies are blue and it was a perfect day for a walk. My son wanted to take me for a walk with the girls to show me their school that they will attend in September. It is a 4 km walk. And they live in a very hilly area, actually part way up Boler Mountain, which is the local ski place. I took a few pictures so that I could print them off (just on paper) and we will paste them into a book that we will make, in preparation for school. I want them to feel comfortable about this change as does out DIL and son. They loved playing on both of the play yard equipment areas that they had. ~Photo is mine

Sounds like a lovely day! I miss being able to walk a lot. Arthritis has made that pretty challenging, lately.

@AliCanary I used to be able to walk much further than I can now, but I had a really bad sprain on my left ankle a few years ago, and now I have to wear reall good supportive shoes in order to enjoy walking again.

@Juliaacv I used to walk for miles, listening to my headphones. I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Is that Harper on the slide? She may be small now, but her legs are long, and feet look big. She may be hitting a growth spurt. They still have awhile before school starts.

Yes, that is little Harper. She is super slim, and her legs look long because her coat rode up because of the slide. She is only 32 pounds.

Oh they are such fussy children if you take them to the part before the sun is too high in the sky. The park equipment, mostly the slides, are still wet, and they will make you wipe them down or take them home. Harper, here in the photo, with her Daddy, has grown so much this past 6 months. Her little legs look really long here, and she was so proud when she asked to see the photo and she noticed that on herself. She told me, almost as tall as Daddy-of course he is 6ft 3inches and she is a far cry from that.

That is so cute though. Someday that'll make a funny story to tell her.

@rebelann Last weekend, I helped her change out of her Easter dress and tights and I saw her legs, and noticed that she finally has thighs. She is so tiny, she has a super charged metabolism.

I see the cute little Harper on the slide, she seems to enjoy. I hope you enjoyed the walk, 4 km on a hilly area can be exhausting for those little ones. I am sure they will enjoy going to school. My niece told me that Bianca is very happy to have more friends and to learn.

We notice that at times Harper is quiet, and we suspect that she is bored as she isn't challenged, we noticed the same with Willow. They are ready for school. The park that they go to is a little over a km away, and they can walk that without feeling tired. They often hold hands and skip along and sing together. Often times people come out of their yards, if they hear them singing and greet the girls as they go along the sidewalk. The people of the neighbourhood are quite friendly.

@LadyDuck Jonathon likes going for walks alone with me and the girls. We always walked over the years together, and talked about things. I asked him if he felt his life got so much busier 4 years ago, and he told me that he never noticed it until 1 year ago, when they had them in 3 different activities which took up 1 night a week each. He told me that they learned that they are too young for that, maybe when they are 7 or 8 they can handle that. I told him to realize that it will depend on the demographics of the neighbourhood, because if families arrive with children that the girls would like to play with, then they will not necessarily 'need' to put them in organized activities, they can save their money for other things.

@Juliaacv - When they grow up, school is a good way to keep busy, if not they get bored. It's very good if they enjoy walking, it's the best way to stay healthy without stressing our body too much. I loved to walk with my Dad. We are also lucky here with our neighbours, they are very kind and helpful.

Glad you all had a good day. Will the girls be brought to school or have a school bus take them?

My son explained to me that they applied for a bus, but it depends on the number of children and how many bus drivers they have. The children living outside of the city limits take priority. They may have to be driven to school.

That's such a good idea to get them as accustomed as possible to their new school. That was a long walk though. Will they walk to school each day? I shouldn't think so but I'll ask anyway. I think you've said before that they'll catch a bus.

@JudyEv She is the smaller of the two, but she is cleaver, and she has such an incredible memory. She will go well in school.

I think that this will change more than once before school starts in September, but as it stands it will be a numbers thing-number of students requiring buses and number of bus drivers. Bus driving is not a cherished nor thankful job, students, teachers and motorists make it difficult, as well as the winter weather driving. Most drivers are retired people. If there are enough drivers, and enough to provide the country children with transportation, then the girls will get a bus ride to school. This is based on the fact that their street is the very first street 'in town' and children a block away would not qualify. I told our son and daughter-in-law not to stress or worry, as long as we are able to drive, we will step in and offer our help. As it is my husband is number 3 on the school's list to call in case of emergency. Our son is number 1, but he told us that should he get a call, his first call will be to Dad, so he is really numbers 1 and 3. Our son is a manager at work, and he spends so many hours in a given week in meetings, some of which he cannot get out of. I think that it is fine to walk there now, but Harper wanted to be carried part of the way home-she does this to 'have one up' on Willow, not necessarily because she is tired, although she seems to be able convince her Dad that she is. The same does not fly with Grandpa on their walks.

Thank you. Little Harper has grown so much over the past 4 or 5 months. I helped her to take off her good Easter dress last weekend and take off her tights and I was so happy when I saw some meat finally on her legs, she had no thigs until recently. Poor kid needs to grow a bum too, but I suppose that will come in time.

You are making so many special moments and memories with those little cuties. I am sure they will love school this fall, and they will watch out for each other there, too.

We have always taught them to look after each other. It was not a difficult task, we used to see them sleeping as newborns and holding hands. They likely did that while in the womb still. We see them do it when one or the other is nervous, or when we go for walks together down the sidewalk. Harper is particularly quick to reach out for Willow's hand when she feels nervous, I remember seeing her do that at the first swimming lesson during the many sessions that they have taken over the years.
