The surprise that wasn't a surprise at all.

I was supposed to be at a surprise birthday party for my cousin's husband. I have always been close with their family, and his daughters arranged to secretly be here and planned for us all to meet for lunch--I think there was to be 12 of us. So I got ready and off I went, had lined up someone to hang out with the son for a bit, etc.
The birthday man is a creature of habit. On Thursdays, he always goes to a certain restaurant downtown that has delicious food. He had no idea his daughters had secretly planned this, and today, of all days--he didn't show up there! He's always there by 11:15 on Thursdays--I know that because I have met him and his wife many times there in the past, until she passed away last year. Anyway, his daughter finally texted him and said she thought she would meet up with him if he was going to be at his Thursday place, and he texted back to say at the last minute he decided to meet 2 of his old state trooper buddies at their favorite place!!
The party is changed to Saturday. His daughters told him they would take him to lunch, and we are going to try one more time to have the surprise party.
This cousin is a big creature of habit...he is very predictable. Obviously, we counted on that a bit too much!
I definitely surprised the son by coming home right away!

That often happens. When you think you know what to expect it changes

He has had certain days he goes to certain places for years and years. His friends and family have never known him to deviate from his routine before. But today of all days! Crazy.

We decided someday we will look back on it and laugh...in the end, it doesn't matter. What matters is that he is doing well and we will get to see him for his birthday.

@MarieCoyle - I remember that it happened to my Dad, they organized a surprise party for a colleague and he did not show up because he went out with his family to another restaurant.

I've been to a lot of surprise parties over the years, but never before did I go to one that the guest of honor didn't show up! Hopefully, he will show up tomorrow!

Did they try again? I think we will be able to surprise him tomorrow. His daughter told him they would pick him up and take him to lunch, so at least he will be at the right restaurant this time!

We all are fine and he has no clue he sent his girls and guests into a panic, because he didn't know about the party. When he finds out what happened, I can hear that belly laugh...he will think it's hilarious. Thanks, Judy.
