Back in the land of the living

It’s a great many years since I’ve been in hospital but I spent a night there recently. They were very thorough with the paper work even if it did take a lot of time. Every time anyone came anywhere near me I had to give my full name and date of birth. They apologised for asking but if I gave it once I must have given it at least a dozen times. They wrote down any valuables – watch, phone, charger, rings. I had signed papers before I went in and I’d be asked if it was my signature on the paper. They would check my wrist and ankle bands which were red signifying I had an allergy so I got asked about that every time too. The next question would be why was I in hospital. I guess they need to be doubly certain everything is correct. I’ve heard horror stories of the wrong leg being amputated or the wrong hip replaced so I didn’t mind any of the questions. Towards the end, I also had my ‘cognitive function’ checked and was asked to give the names of the months backwards. I hadn’t practised that one! But I’m home now and progressing ‘as well as can be expected’. I’m behind with my myLotting but hopefully I’ll catch up soon.

Naming the months backwards Not if I was wasted from meds I probably wouldn't manage to do that

@Ineeddentures Here's the link to the discussion: If you read that, the information is there AND I'll get a penny if you comment!
There’s nothing like being a bit dramatic and a drama queen but don’t get too concerned. Early tomorrow I’m having an operation called Zenkers peroral...

It caught me by surprise but I didn't have any trouble. It's probably the age - mine, not theirs.

@JudyEv So what was wrong with your throat if you don't mind me asking

You aren't behind on myLotting. You're right where you need to be. I'm glad you're progressing and hope you're 100% before much longer.

You always say the nicest things. When I first came home, I went back three days of discussions but had to give up so I'll just take up now where I normally would.

@JudyEv I know how it is when you can't be here. I always try to go back and catch things up. When I've only missed a day or two, I can manage that but when I'm gone for a week, it's too much for me, too. I just start like I do every day when I come online and nobody has complained about that yet.

@DaddyEvil That's what I've done. Just carried on in my normal fashion - in a manner of speaking.

After all of that counting backwards and providing your names, please slow down and recuperate, don't worry about myLotting, you are right where you need to be. And it is reassuring that you are healthy.

I am not sure I could do a good job naming the months backwards. Those hospital paperworks are so annoying, surely even more for you if your throat hurts.

@LadyDuck They usually ask you to count backwards from 100 when they've administered the anesthetic. I might get to 97 before

@JudyEv - It's just like counting from 100 backwards, it's annoying.

I understand it's all for a good reason but having to do the months was a surprise. It's probably because of my age.

Glad you are back home and doing OK. I really want a baseline cognitive function test so in a decade or two I can prove that my memory has always been this bad!

What a marvellous idea - a baseline cognitive function test! I might have told you we and our friends practise starting at 100 and taking off 7 each time which is one of the Mini-Mental tests. When Vince told his doctor, the doctor said they'd change the number which he did but he made it 5! What could be easier?

I just practiced saying the months backwards, just in case. So nice to see you back here.

Thanks, Dianne. One of the Mini-Mental tests is to count backwards from 100 taking off 7 each time. We and our friends have been practising that. lol

Maybe they ask yo a lot of times just to check if you are not forgetting anything. I am glad you are okay now.

Thanks. Yes, they need to make sure I am who I say I am.

They have a sign at the VA about why they verify who you are: they have a picture of people named Joe D. Young, Jody Young, Jodie Young, and Joe E Yung all sitting in the waiting room. I have to give my name and last four of the social security number or date of birth. When I had my bloodwork done last week I verified who I was, then he showed me the paperwork for me to check before he put it on the blood vials. Anyway, glad that's done, and glad you passed your cognitive function test!

I do understand that it's for a good reason. I just did as I was asked.

You are never behind here. Just start again. I would have to do the months slowly. It's not something you think about.

I didn't really have any trouble but I was going slowly. I didn't want to get it wrong. lol

pretty picture. I used to hate being asked many times, but now I don't mind because I know now that is how they know they have the right person.

For "cognitive function' you could have given links to your posts here in myLot! I have also been checked after becoming a senior citizen and so far I have passed in flying colors! It is good that they take every care to see that nothing goes wrong.

Haha. Yes I should have mentioned myLot! lol It's good that they double-check to make sure they have the right person.

Good luck with that. In general, it seems to be very successful. They seem to do it with lasers here.
