Baseball Sized Hail!

I was looking for a shirt to wear in my bedroom closet when I heard a bullet strike the roof right above my head. I jumped and shouted! Pretty came running into my bedroom asking if I was hurt... Then we heard hail striking the storm windows in both bedrooms. I'd heard the first hailstone hitting the roof above my head! We both headed to the front door and saw baseball sized hailstones landing in the street, in the yard and shattering on the front porch when they landed. I made Pretty wait until it sounded like nothing else was coming down around us and then let her go grab one from the yard and take pictures of it. Right after she stepped back into the house, hail started falling again only this time it was only marble sized hail. The whole yard turned white from all the ice covering the grass. Image belongs to me. Hailstone the size of Pretty's palm.

@TheHorse A few years ago we got it and it totaled all our cars. I felt terrible for the people in my complex who had liability only. One lady had this red car that was just gorgeous. Her brother had given it to her. Unfortunately, she had liability only, and it just crushed her.

@lovebuglena Yup! We checked all the windows in the house and car and none of them were damaged this time. We just got the storm window in my bedroom replaced after the last hail storm broke the window out.

@DaddyEvil That could do some damage and definitely hurt if it hit a human or animal.

@Tampa_girl7 True. That's why I wouldn't let Pretty go out until after we couldn't hear hail anymore. She doesn't need to be hurt. I need her help in the house.

This is the photo Pretty took right after the large hail stopped falling. I'm drawing a blank on how to send it from my phone to my email so I can add it here. My phone won't open myLot. Normally I just send photos to my email address but I can't remember how to do that again. This is aggravating! Sorry. When I remember how, I'll show you the photo.

We get hail like that once every few years. We get hail with some larger storms but it's usually only the size of a large marble.

Thank you. We can't see the garage windows from in the house and I wouldn't let Pretty go back outside after the second round of hail started falling. We don't know if anything is broken out there.

That is really bad and also the shape is bad because this kind of hail causes damages. I hope you are safe and your roof is not damaged.

@DaddyEvil - She needs to tell the construction guys to check the roofs. When we had hail like that years ago, some of the tiles of our roof had to be replaced.

@LadyDuck Our roof is older so we could have damaged shingles. They're made from thick tar and paper in the US so break fairly easily. We'll tell her.

Thank you. We'll let the landlady know about the hail. (She doesn't live close to us so might not have gotten any of this hail. She'll need to tell her construction guys to check our roof and the roofs of her other tenants here for damages.) We lost some large tree limbs in the back yard but everything seems fine now. Thank you.

@DaddyEvil I experienced that but it's the size of a pingpong ball when I was up north in a province. We were walking and took shelter to a nearby house

That's quite something. I've heard a lot about giant hailstones but never seen anything larger than a marble.

Marble sized hail is what we normally get with a nasty storm and it usually only lasts a minute. The large hail fell for several minutes, stopped and Pretty ran out and grabbed one and ran back into the house and then the marble sized hail started falling. It lasted several more minutes.

Is it the hailstone in the pic?? It's too in big. Here in my area they are like pellets and their shape is round. Anybody can get hurt if hit by them.

Yes, that's one of the hailstones that fell here. Usually they're only the size of marbles, not baseballs.

It's been years since I've seen one and the hail itself couldn't have been more than the size of a marble but the force of the wind caused that hail to break a lot of windows and rooftops around here @DaddyEvil

Some storms bring hail with them but it's rarely that large. Maybe once a year or every two years we'll see hail like that. Usually, it's small marble sized and we just hear a light tapping on the windows when it's falling.

@rebelann This hail looked like it was falling straight down at us. You should have seen some of it shatter when it hit the ground. It looked like a small bomb going off!

Thank you. Nothing was damaged this time but last year we got hail when a tornado was going through and that hail hit so hard it shattered one of my bedroom windows. It took several months before the insurance paid somebody to come and replace the window. The insurance people told me to tape some heavy plastic over the window until they could get to me. I guess a lot of houses had lost windows to that hail.

@aninditasen True but we don't get hailstorms very often. Plastic can keep rain out, though.

@DaddyEvil That was really something very painful. You might have stayed in fear until the window was repaired. Plastic cannot prevent a storm.

Sometime we have walnuts fall on the roof that sound almost that loud. We don't get hail that size very often. Once every few years, maybe.

@Jehanne It's rare the small sized hail can cause damage but it might break small limbs off trees in the back year, which means we have to go out and clean them up before we can mow the yard.

@DaddyEvil then followed by a series of rapid beats. But even a small sized is still loud and it can cause damage?
