Inhibiting culture....hellhole? Not sure

There is something sweet about eastern cultures. We respect our elders. I am sure you all do too at your end. Just that you all take it in your stride, we make a big deal about it. Recent brush with this culture was with my neighbor...who is much older than I, and so by default entitled to "respect", even if he has put his parent in old age home, while I am the caregiver. His "well wishing" comment was adopt a six years old girl, her mother and her step father and her mother's family members will stay in your home and look after you. I told him, I am not interested. He was not taking no. I told him I have different objectives. Doesn't register. I told him, we would be vulnerable to physical abuse because nobody knows what goes on behind the closed door, and since there is no emotional entanglement here and these people will be coming only for money, they are not likely to spare us. Still it does not register. Many other ways to convince the person because he is "elder" so "respectable". Then I blew my top. I told him his behavior was disgusting and mannerless. And that he didn't have an inch of gray matter up there in his head. Offense meant offense taken. Reaction. He says he was only joking. We aren't that close. I even sent provisions of law that said I am not entitled to adopt. But jealousy was preventing him from bothering to read it. Now others think I am rude. LOL Got me thinking, would they forgive this man if he had raped someone, just because he was an elder and so respectable? They sure seemed ok with the idea of me being physically abused and so also my 91 years old parent. The culture is not wrong. The way it is followed is.

Hello Vanny, it's so nice to see you around, it was really a long time. What a rude and ignorant man he is. Forget about him, go on your own way and let him talk.

I am so glad to see you Anna. Imagine me footing bills of the entire family!!! Post retirement. Including medicals. And then education and dowry of the little girl. I would have to forego all my desires even compromise on my medical bills to give that dowry maybe start working at 66. Surely, this is common sense for a man who passes off as a provider for his family!!! I think it is envy or guilt that he didn't do much for his mom when she was alive despite him having enough money and having siblings and kids and spouse to share the responsibility with. Kinda, he wanted me to fail...he felt uncomfortable at the thought that I as a woman (its a big deal here) am able to take care of my parent, whereas he with larger family dumped his mother in an old age home. He does not want others to look down upon him, so he has to bring me to a situation in which I will fail.

@vandana7 - This man is insane. You are doing an excellent job with your father. You take care of him and you take care of yourself. He dumped his own mother and now he wants to "teach" you what you have to do. He is a horrible man.

Glad to see you back. Your culture takes respect to far in my opinion. You were nice to start. When he didn't take the hints it was time to be blunt.

I'm not sure that 'respect' is a right. It needs to be earned and this neighbour is totally out of bounds. I'm glad you didn't take any notice of him.

Nobody can take care of your parents like you. I heard the horrible story of a grandma who was always beaten by the caregiver that was meant to take care of her. The kids didn't have any knowledge this was happening because they weren't even living in the country
