Pack Rat.

This is the first time I learn of this term. I look up for the word hoarder and AI days this is a milder term than hoarder. Pack rat is someone reluctant to throw things away because the thing or the person who gave the item is sentimental. I think my mother-in-law is like this. I mentioned earlier that I went to their house to help clean. My SIL and I found a lot of old items that are no longer useful in the cabinets around the house. We help cleaned the house because they are both seniors and my FIL recently underwent surgery. We found old and worn out branded slippers, slipons, and sandals. Pots and pans no longer usable, old cabinets, tons of old receipts, old magazines, and much needed to dispose mattress. I am home now and exhausted. And we haven't clean the whole house yet, just the ground floor. I'm not sure what awaits us on the second floor.

Hoarder pack rat whatever you call it, sounds like your MIL has a problem. It is good of you to help out. My parents house is neat for the most part on the main level, and the garage isn't bad, but the basement is totally stuffed. Sis thinks it would take a year to get it cleaned out.

I was telling my SIL that her mom has a lot of stuff in the deeper part of the cabinets, now she believes me

That definitely sounds like more of a hoarder than anything. Pack rat is kinder, but wow, your mother-in-law sounds like she has dealt with the extreme.

Pretty and I can be pack rats. We still have extra stuff stored in the garage from when we moved into this house that we thought we needed but have never used. Once in a while one of us goes out and brings something in from out there but we really need to sort through everything and give more stuff away again. i know we have several bed frames stored out there that somebody could be using and Pretty needs to carry out another one plus a good mattress and box springs.

I hope your in-laws appreciate your efforts and are not trying to hang on to things that are no longer useful.

I hope so too. Since I did a garage sale in their garage before, I used to tell my MIL that I would help her with her clothes. Her cabinet is triple the size of mine now, and deeper, too. There are so many clothes there that she is not using.

@JudyEv yes, that is a possibility. As far as I know, they frequently move places growing up. Probably not having permanent things made her somewhat like this

@rakski Some people really hate to give things away. Maybe it stems from some not having very much in their younger years so they feel the need to hang on to what they do have.

My best friend is a packrat. She won't get rid of anything for fear that she might need it later.

oh yes we saw 2 strainers and took away one. After a few minutes, MIL got the other strainer back and said she is still going to use it

My husband for sure used to be a packrat, I am still fighting to avoid that he starts again to keep old magazines and things we do not need.

that does sound like a lot of work cleaning out the house. Pack Rat is a term I'm familiar with and something I think I have a tendency to keep things longer than I should

I just learned that word now. It's understandable why it's pack rat we know how rat takes so many things and hide it to their hideout.
