At Least I Gotta Hand it to Them

If you've been paying attention to music news, you know that there will be a new release soon by legendary rock band, The Rolling Stones, which will be a 14-track LP featuring some drum parts from Charlie Watts, added post-partum of course, and will feature guest musicians like Paul McCartney, the Cure's Robert Smith, RHCP's Chad Smith and Steve Winwood. 2023 was their last release with Hackney Diamonds. Whenever these legendary bands put out new stuff, they do well, but the music never even remotely comes close to what made them legends to begin with. None of the songs will likely become iconic in the way the ones that will live on forever and made them famous will. But still, you have to hand it to them for still doing what they love and giving their fans something new to at least admire. I listened to two early releases, In the Stars, and Rough and Twisted, and the only impression I'd have of them are this; if these songs were released and performed by anyone else, no one would listen to them at all, and likely no one would even know they existed. That's not to say they aren't good songs. But it is to say they are not of the legendary fare we became used to. In other words, anyone could have written these songs. They are written and performed by The Rolling Stones, but they are not Rolling Stones songs, if you know what I mean.

I saw that headline yesterday and was in shock that these octogenarians were still putting out new music.

Many old bands still do. Like I said, you gotta hand it to them. But the songs mostly are just 'meh.' It's kind of like fast food restaurants. They're always coming up with new sandwiches. But the ones that sell the best always remain the one's that made them famous.

@porwest That's a good analogy. Kind of like the White Castle story I posted about the other day that they're coming out with a chicken fajita slider. Just stick with the little square burgers. Hell, Mick Jagger at 82 has way more energy and flexibility than I do at 61.

@LooeyVille Both Jagger and Richards piss me off. WAY too healthy for their age and lifestyle, yet there they are. Incidentally, whenever I go to White Castle, that's all I get. Just the little square burgers.

Interesting. I did not hear about this. Could it be they are not the ones that actually wrote the songs? What did you mean by post-partum I’m in this case?

I don't know who wrote the new songs. Might have been a team of writers. But historically, the Stones have mostly written all their own songs.

@porwest I think artists should write their own songs. At the very least, cowrite them.

@lovebuglena Sometimes people have certain talents and songwriting just isn't one of them. Take Elvis Presley. He didn't write any of his songs. He did receive a few co-writing credits, but it was due to a business arrangement, not because he actually contributed to the songwriting process.

If you're a superfan, you'll love them. If you're just a very strong admirer of the great songs of Rolling Stones, these won't send you to the moon. lol

I do know what you're saying. It's like that with some authors.

That's a good point. Unfortunate to say, but there's a period when the well is rich, and then one day it goes dry, but there's just enough water left to eke a little something more out of it. But it's never quite the same.

Yes, I love the Stones and I'm tickled pink that they're still doing what they love to do!

Like I say, I gotta hand it to them. I mean, they're way past the point of needing to sell a lot of records. Now they just get to make some new music and have some fun. The hard work was already done.

Hey, I say if you can be like the Energizer Bunny, keep at it. Probably if they would stop the action they might just whither away.

It's sad when the quality is less than it used to be.

It is amazing that the Rolling Stones are still making music for such a long time.
