At Least I Gotta Hand it to Them

If you've been paying attention to music news, you know that there will be a new release soon by legendary rock band, The Rolling Stones, which will be a 14-track LP featuring some drum parts from Charlie Watts, added post-mortem of course, and will feature guest musicians like Paul McCartney, the Cure's Robert Smith, RHCP's Chad Smith and Steve Winwood. 2023 was their last release with Hackney Diamonds. Whenever these legendary bands put out new stuff, they do well, but the music never even remotely comes close to what made them legends to begin with. None of the songs will likely become iconic in the way the ones that will live on forever and made them famous will. But still, you have to hand it to them for still doing what they love and giving their fans something new to at least admire. I listened to two early releases, In the Stars, and Rough and Twisted, and the only impression I'd have of them are this; if these songs were released and performed by anyone else, no one would listen to them at all, and likely no one would even know they existed. That's not to say they aren't good songs. But it is to say they are not of the legendary fare we became used to. In other words, anyone could have written these songs. They are written and performed by The Rolling Stones, but they are not Rolling Stones songs, if you know what I mean.

Interesting. I did not hear about this. Could it be they are not the ones that actually wrote the songs? What did you mean by post-partum I’m in this case?

@porwest I think artists should write their own songs. At the very least, cowrite them.

@lovebuglena Sometimes people have certain talents and songwriting just isn't one of them. Take Elvis Presley. He didn't write any of his songs. He did receive a few co-writing credits, but it was due to a business arrangement, not because he actually contributed to the songwriting process.

I don't know who wrote the new songs. Might have been a team of writers. But historically, the Stones have mostly written all their own songs.

It is amazing that the Rolling Stones are still making music for such a long time.

@porwest That is true since many of us pass away when we cannot find something to keep us active.

Hey, I say if you can be like the Energizer Bunny, keep at it. Probably if they would stop the action they might just whither away.

The thing now is, they don't have to worry about selling lots of records. They just get to have fun doing what they love to do, and the fans get a little something out of it too.

It's sad when the quality is less than it used to be.

For some, they just need to retire. Have you seen David Lee Roth on stage lately? Or Frankie Valli. Both are disasters. lol

It's always a pity when an iconic band does not perform up to their usual standards. They will sell a lot of records though I'm sure.

They are at that stage of the game where, I think, selling records is not as important as just doing what they love and having fun, and giving the fans a little something extra. They've more than made their money.

If you're a superfan, you'll love them. If you're just a very strong admirer of the great songs of Rolling Stones, these won't send you to the moon. lol

I do know what you're saying. It's like that with some authors.

That's a good point. Unfortunate to say, but there's a period when the well is rich, and then one day it goes dry, but there's just enough water left to eke a little something more out of it. But it's never quite the same.

Like I say, I gotta hand it to them. I mean, they're way past the point of needing to sell a lot of records. Now they just get to make some new music and have some fun. The hard work was already done.
