How can a mother have the heart to abandon two children?!

This week, two french children, aged 5 and 3, were abandoned in a wooded area in Portugal. The news shocked the entire country.
Their mother and stepfather blindfolded them and told them to go find a toy in the woods. A baker passing by the road found the two children crying and very frightened.
The parents were arrested two days later, they were in a Park, 200 kilometres from where they abandoned the children.
I don't understand how a mother can do something so monstrous! She didn't abandon them at the door of a church or a charity, She abandoned them on the woods, next to a road, blindfolded, in a country where they don't speak the language. It is horrible! Such small children could have been taken by a car, be harmed by mean people, gotten lost in the woods or been attacted by an animal...
There are so many couples waiting to adopt, it would have been better to give the children for adoption.
This was the first case of children abandonment I'd ever heard of. Has something like this ever happened where you live?

I am shocked to hear about these poor children. I really don't understand how a mother could do that and no, I've never heard of an abandonment story like that. I hope those children find loving people to adopt them and give them a good life. The fact that you said it's a true story, it's almost like a movie or book based on fiction.

Their parents are arrested now and the children are with a host family.

It happens in the US too. Not often. It's been a long time since I heard a report about one. Yes, it's tragic!

I read this news yesterday on my local news site. Like in every country, there are cases that reporters find out about parents not acting as parents and we,audience, get informed but to drive to another different country and leave their children in the woods,no,i haven't heard similar news before. But,i am glad to hear they were fed and alive.i would pity mother more if she was a single mum and basically to hear her story. The case when a young single mum tried to drown with a child here and the child not surviving, that shook me.i think it was a year ago and a woman was having mental issues.i think her losing the child was the biggest punishment and that would haunt her forever so i don't like to judge anyone without hearing their side of the story.
