Here's what the Knee Doctor Said

Doctors are interesting creatures, aren't they? The orthopedic doctor took x-rays of both my knees today and examined both knees, concentrating on the right knee, which I feel is my "bad" knee. Xrays showed that my arthritis is worse than two years ago, moving from the "mild" stage to the "moderate" stage. The doctor explained that I may very well have a meniscus tear in my right knee. But get this . . . because of my age and fact that they have arthritis, they won't fix the tear. Now, if I were 25 years old, they would fix the tear. But given that I'm 61 and have arthritis, they say I just have to live with it unless/until it's time to get a knee replacement surgery. He did give me a steroid (cortisone) shot in my bad knee in the meantime. He also said I have floating cartilage floating around in my knee that has broken off from my knee but they don't do anything about that either.

Oh dear. Now I know the answer to what I asked in the previous post. Sorry to hear that the arthritis is worse than it was 2 years ago. When roughly would knee replacement be needed

Is that because of the dangers of going under anesthesia at an “older” age, or is that just an ageist attitude. Sixty-one is not old. I wonder if other doctors feel the same way is this just an uncaring moron. I’m really sorry they won’t or can’t do more.

It sucks when doctors can't fix anything.

My husband had that surgery in his early 30's and it was a long recovery. Even with taking 6 weeks off from work, he wasn't able to drive his vehicle as it had a stick shift in it. And now that we're in our 60's, every once in a while he will complain that it aches him. You're better off without the surgery, besides you do not have the worry about the complications from the anesthesia or the healing process afterwards.

I need two total knee replacements and was supposed to have done them but I put them off and still not. I'm 67. Those shots hurt for me. Did it you? Did it help? It's been awhile since I've had one.

@LooeyVille It's been so long, so maybe I'll try again with the new RA doctor next month. My Ortho wants to do them in my shoulder next month before PT.

@noni1959 I really didn't know what to expect as today was my very first one, but it was a good experience. It was the "cortisone/steroid" - not the "gel"

They don't like to stitch/repair those meniscus tears if you are over 50, at least that is what my friend was told. From what her doctor said, it is usually successful, but the repair doesn't hold for long at all. If your knee locks up, they will fix the knee or do a knee replacement--but who wants to wait for their knee to lock up? It's all weird.

61 is still pretty young, so that stinks, in my opinion. I hope the steroid shot worked.

@looeyville I don’t suppose there’s much point in lying about your age! A friend of mine was the top dog in knee and hip replacement, and ended up getting his own hips and knees replaced in his 60s. I hope the cortisone gives you some help.

So that's all a bit disappointing. It means a few painful years I guess.

Not easy to live with that condition. If knee replacement surgery will fix that condition, it has to be done ASAP.

Cartilage is very difficult to repair and struggles to heal itself so I understand their reluctance to meddle!
