Today we have the first, but certainly not the last, intentionally funny song (I say that in case people with various music tastes find some of the other songs “funny”
) on the list of songs that reference the Beatles. Let’s laugh along with one of the greatest parodists in music history.
One of Those Days - Weird Al Yankovic
Yes, Weird Al does things other than parodies. It’s the parodies that made him famous, but he also writes his own original songs. I don’t know if people who did nothing but parodies would last long. (I’d imagine paying royalties to the original songwriters would break them of that habit quickly.)
Instead of spoofing a song, what Yankovic will do — brilliantly — is spoof a certain sub-genre of music, or the sound of a particular artist. You may remember that I used a song from this album in the 40-year-old list, “Dog Eat Dog,” which was a spoof of Talking Heads’ sound. This sounds like some of those late 60s bubblegum pop songs musically. Lyrically, it’s a song that has just about every catastrophe known to man (“a big swarm of locusts is following me”) happening to one poor guy.
That includes the destruction of his Beatles records. However, since the bomb drops at the end of the song, it doesn’t really matter.
Have a laugh with Weird Al.
One of Those Days
Written by Alfred Yankovic
Recorded by Weird Al Yankovic
From Polka Party!, 1986

Weird Al
I once thought that was directed at Al Gore.
Wonder if he could write funny songs

I had to read Gore’s Earth in the Balance in college. He’s not weird, he’s BORING.

@Ineeddentures — if you have insomnia it’ll cure you in the preface.

I don’t, either. You’re not hanging out with me enough?

I grew up on Homer and Jethro, so someone who showed their brilliance naturally attracted me.

I’ve not heard this before, but I love Weird Al Yankovic, so I’ll give it the thumbs up.

Lots of funny stuff in his “style” spoofs along with the outright parodies.

I love that line. I also like the one about spilling toxic waste on his pants.

"I don’t know if people who did nothing but parodies would last long." - True. Bruce "Baby Man" Baum lasted an album. Never heard from again. Then again, Al is more clever with it than others.

I say that Weird Al is this generation’s Homer & Jethro. They were stinking geniuses at it…not to mention their musicianship.

I thought I had heard all of Weird Al's songs; but this is a new one for me.

I’m full of surprises like this. (I’m full of it too; however, my colonoscopy next month will fix that!

@LindaOHio — I remember my grandfather having that colonostomy bag after his colon cancer surgery in the 70s, and the prep is much easier.

@FourWalls I don't envy you. The prep is horrendous as you probably already know.
