child brides in nigeria
that's right
bloody heathens marry them off at 12 years old, the practice is common in Nigeria’s remote northern state of Bauchi,
they sell them and refer to them as women
when they reach puberty
the husband can be any age there is no upper limit
it's their culture and they say that is the right thing for a woman to do - she will grow up quickly and learn how to take care of a man and the home and bring honor to her family
poor girls

Till they are at least 18 but it has been going on for a long time and I can't see Nigerian men ever stopping doing it .
Misogyny at its worst.

It has been like that in the Middle East for centuries. It's sick.

@Ineeddentures - Child marriage is illegal in the UK. The legal age for marriage has been raised to 18, with no exceptions for parental consent. This was done exactly to protect vulnerable children to be obliged to get married.

It was Nigeria which was brought to my attention by one of my neighbours Anna.
He is checking on the legality of such a marriage to be allowed to continue if both husband and wife are in the UK.

Let kids grow up first and then when they are adults, then that is okay.

I've read about a particular community where such traditions are followed. It should be banned by the government.

Well you need to tell the misogynistic officials in charge of such matters in Nigeria that this is wrong
Does somewhat explain how most ordinary Nigerian men I have encountered have been extremely misogynistic ,

I think it is not only wrong but totally evil to do that to a female child. They need time to learn, learn to read, learn numbers, play and have fun. Angers me to think about.

They have been doing it for centuries
Child marriage has happened on places you wouldn't believe.
Once it wasn't that rare at all

I saw one testimony from a girls father
He married her off at 13 to a 65 year old
And then said he wished it was someone of 50 years old maybe.55 years old
But hey, the dowry was good he said

Child marriage is a serious issue, and it’s understandable to react strongly to stories like this. At the same time, it helps to separate criticism of a harmful practice from broad judgments about entire groups of people.

It was only one group of people I referred to as misogynist and not only because of this issue but because it has been true of 90% of Nigerian men I have encountered.
So the criticism stands

Dowry
Gift to a brides family when the girl gets married
In Nigeria that's stuff like a cow or a bag of salt etc etc
