No more FaceTube or Tikkity Tok for children …..

So, our Prime Minister has announced to us all that it is now against the law of this country for children to be on social media !
And, just how, pray tell, is this supposed to work ?
Whilst there will be some parents who will say no to their children and do as the law bids …..
We all know that most will not.
Too many parents rely on phones and iPads to entertain their children these days. After all, it saves the parents doing it doesn’t it !
As a parent, Grandparent and a teacher working in schools for 40 years i can see the pros and cons of the internet and social media where children are concerned.
All that is going to happen is the same as now ….if children want accounts they will simply lie about their birthdate …..
Children should be outside, making friends, gaining social skills, improving and widening their vocabulary. Learning how to deal with problems, getting involved with things , learning how to be a team member, learning right from wrong, how to make the best choices, learning that sometimes you do fail and how to deal with it. They should be learning about responsibilities and how to do things for themselves, making up games, using their imagination…..
For me the list is endless……
I’m not saying children shouldn’t be able to access SOME social media ….it is the way of the world after all …
I’m just not sure how this is supposed to work….
Anyway….what are your thoughts ?

When I was a youngster, I had to entertain myself. I read books, I rode my bike, I played with the neighbor kids, I rode horses and played in the pastures....

@Traceyjayne The world has changed since we were kids. I didn't feel like I could let Pretty run around like I did when I was growing up. I took her bike riding, horse back riding, to amusement parks, flying kites, etc, but I was always nearby. Kids needed more protecting when she was growing up.

You nailed it. I don't think I could say it better myself. While the country could geo block the sites, they won't, because adults wouldn't be able to access it either. Children can lie about their age, and parents can make accounts on a child's behalf. Hell, back in the day when the child protection acts for the internet were coming out, parents needed to fill out and submit a form to allow their 13-year-old on some sites that required personalliy idienifable information. Yet, kids could get around it. If a child in the 90's could get around parental blocks, you can bet a child today can use enough brain power to figure it out.
I applud Apple for trying to make child accounts on smart phones and tablets safer requiring more parental involvment, but if I've learned anything, children have become spoild, entitled, and downright disrespectful.
Keeping kids off of social media might help the problem, but we need to change society's views on what is and isn't safe.
Kids aren't adicted to social medica souly because it exists and is what 'everyone's doing', but because society has put it in our minds kids aren't safe playing outside. That allowing a child to fail and learn from failure is dangerous and could cause irreversal psychological damage. Earned rewards aren't a thing anymore, because parents don't know how to parent their children, turn around and tell the schools to do it, and then when they do, blame the school for harming their child, or making teachers and staff powerless.

It’s the parents fault for buying the kids the smartphones in the 1st place. That’s my opinion!

@Traceyjayne We didn’t even have a landline when I was young. If I wanted to speak with friends, I had to go and knock on their door and ask if such and such was in.

@traceyjayne Amen to all that! There’s got to be a better way that trying to ban it, a ban that just won’t work.

Unfortunately. Lots of parents here give their children phones, iPads etc with games on so that they can entertain themselves. It means the parents can then do what they want . I can’t see that changing ….peoples attitude today is ….im not going to be told what to do …..

@Traceyjayne It's just the same here. Too much of the discipline and training is left to the teachers.

@jaylar sounds like we had similar childhoods …..and I am so thankful for my childhood ….always outside, inventing our own games, no mobiles, no internet, only 3 channels on tv ….

@Traceyjayne if the kids didn't have smart phones, and there were a lot of physical activities... I think reality would over ride.
I got the cheapest phone, and leave it home when I'm going up the road. To be on the Net requires me to be in front of the laptop, connect the internet. When I was a child I was always outside, always in sports or playing, and it was only television that took me to fantasy... and television was limited by my folks.

It’s a nice thought, but like you said, it’s not going to work. It’s too easy to get around. My niece is almost 15, and she’s not allowed to have social media until she is seventeen. Strict, yes, but my sister doesn’t want her to be influenced by it. Since she keeps an eye on Amyra’s devices, she can tell what she’s been doing. She doesn’t have access to other computers. That’s hard to do, but since she is home schooled, she really can check.

Well done to your sister for being a responsible parent. Great values. That’s what we need more of….
As you can probably guess Grandson is only just 14 but on social media …he just uses his Moms date of birth .
There have been many times that he has had something on his phone in the car and we have heard swearing …..( he is told to come off that game / program etc ….but obviously he is on it at home ….no parental options have been used ). It makes me mad but also very sad …l

I agree with you, I think children will find loopholes and ways around the ban. If they want to be on the social media sites bad enough, they'll find ways to get there.

I can see both sides of this debate. On the one hand, there are genuine concerns about children being exposed to bullying, harmful content, unrealistic expectations, and spending too much time online. On the other hand, I share your skepticism about how a ban is supposed to work in practice.

I do not like government telling me or children not to look at social media. I limit the use of social media since some of the complaints about racial and political issues is annoying.

Is that because you don’t like the Government ? Would it make a difference if it were an organisation or individual saying the same ….?
When you say limit the use of social media, what do you mean .? ….time limit, platform , ?

@Traceyjayne I do not social media suspending my account for simply saying things like "Go jump in a river" when a fool says things like "Do not misgender me." I just do not any government telling me not to try to correct people who are transgender since it considered to be offensive speech,
