My friend came round on Saturday evening to share a gin and tonic in the garden and just have a bit of a catch-up. She mentioned that she had a plumbing problem. The water seemed to be slow draining from the washbasin in her bathroom, so she had decided to clean out the drainpipe properly. She unscrewed the trap, cleaned out all the horrible gunk and reattached it, but then it wouldn’t stop leaking. She and her husband both tried screwing it back together several times each, she bought some new washers, she called her brother for advice, all to no avail, water just kept fountaining out of the joints. Now she thought she would have to give in and call a plumber. Well of course I said she mustn’t do that for something so simple! I promised to pop round in the morning, since she lives about 10 minutes’ walk away. So yesterday I collected up spare parts, gloves, tape and putty and went round to have a look. I carefully examined the joints then screwed them all back together and poured some water down to check, it was all fine. I didn’t need any of the things I’d brought. I filled the basin a couple of times and flushed the water down and it worked perfectly. Fastest fix ever! We had a good laugh about that. Her husband did seem a bit disgruntled though. That saved her at least £50. She did make me a cup of tea All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2026.

It's just a question of doing it carefully and precisely. No magic about it!

I have thought many times about a career change. But I would be far too soft-hearted to charge someone £50 for that, for example.

Men always prefer to be the one with the solution, don’t they. Good for you! I bet if you were here, I’d have hot water.

Sometimes a fresh look does the trick. Nice that you were able to fix it.

I've thought many times about re-training as a plumber, but I'm afraid I would be too soft-hearted to charge people for simple jobs like that.

I can imagine the husband's 'disgruntledness'. I want to tear my hair out when I spend hours maybe on a computer problem and Vince fixes it in five seconds.

@Fleura Poor guy. He'd be fuming when they'd tried so hard to do it themselves.

Me too! I was sure it couldn't be too difficult to solve, I would have been disappointed if I had to give in as well!
