So it's avocado season here now. I bought these avocados three days ago. Yesterday they were rocks. Today they're perfect. Tomorrow they'll be a science experiment. I swear avocados give you about a two-hour window to get your life together. I used to put them in the fridge, but I just learned that if they're not ripe yet, the cold can slow down or stop the ripening process. So that's what I was doing wrong!! Not totally related, but I have an Aussie friend who always says, "I'll be out for the arvo." For the longest time, I thought he was talking about avos (avocados) and not the afternoon. So are you a fan of this fruit in the photo, or is avocado a hard pass for you?

I like them but it's a bit tricky to know just when to eat them, as you say.

Right? One day they're hard as a rock, and the next they're perfect. You have to catch them at just the right time

@Wrexxo Do mangoes grow there? We have lots of them here in the Philippines, so I’m wondering if they’re common where you are too

I would like to try them again. I only used to eat them for dessert. But some are using them for sauce/dressing or salad.

@rakski You have to try it! Guacamole is one of my favourite ways to eat avocado. The creamy texture with a bit of lime and seasoning makes it so much better. It’s great as a dip or spread too

Same here. I grew up eating avocados as a dessert, so that's still my favorite way to enjoy them. But I also like them in sandwiches, on toast, and of course in guacamole

You gave me a good laugh! I'm not a fan of avocados, but I like pears, and they do the SAME thing!!

We don't really have pears here, but don't they kind of look like avocados? Maybe they're related in spirit

@sol_cee maybe so! They also have a big stone inside, but the flesh looks more like an apple, but softer and a little bit gritty (I know that sounds weird, but it's fine), and they are VERY sweet. You can probably get canned ones.

@AliCanary I’ve tried peaches before, and they were okay, but they’re not something I’d crave. Jollibee’s Peach Mango Pie is a different story though - it’s so

That’s been my breakfast today since my son brought some from his girlfriend. As the only one who enjoys eating it, I’ve been having it for breakfast since Monday. I’m eating it now because some are already getting ripe and soft, which means they won’t be good to eat much longer. So I’m the only one finishing them.

@sol_cee I added some milk and a bit of sugar for flavor. I’m not really sure how to consume them since I don’t know much about how to eat them.

Good thing you’re there to finish them! It’s always a little sad when good food starts getting too ripe, so at least they’re not going to waste. How did you eat them? Did you just eat them on their own, or did you add them to something?

I love how you put it that they give you about a two hour window. Avocados are good to me, but in small doses. A little guacamole, or a tiny bit on a turkey club..

I like avocados, I buy and keep them wrapped until they are ready to eat. Once they are ripe they last a couple of days.

@sol_cee - When the avocado is not yet ripe I wrap in paper bag, be sure there are no holes and close the bag tightly. Some people add an apple, I never do, usually after 48, max 70 hours the avocado is ready to eat. Do not wrap in plastic.

Wait, there's an avocado trick I don't know about? What do you wrap them in? My current method is basically luck and good timing

I do like them and used to have them with prawns quite often. I am allergic to prawns now and never think to buy an avocado and have it with something else.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE avocados! I could eat them every day, for every meal. I love what you said about avocados giving you a 2-hour window to get your life together. That's so true. One minute they're hard as a rock, and then the next minute they're ripe on their way to overripe.
