We Got Hacked

Or, I should say, they got hacked. My former employer. Around April. They had their servers hacked. And as such, they sent me a letter letting me know about it, and offering a series of recommended steps I should take under the "What should I do?" section of the notice.
Of course, all my information was on that server. My full name. My social security number. My bank routing number and account information from when I had direct deposit. My full name. My address. Pretty much anything a crook would need to become me if he wanted to.
And it got me to thinking. We live in this digital world not by choice. But because we are forced into it. So, then, who's responsibility should it be to fix something if something goes wrong and our information gets in the wrong hands?
It's not like we have the ability to ensure a server is protected. It's completely out of our hands. So, why then, are we responsible for the fallout if it happens?

On past data breaches like the AT&T one a few years ago, they offered free credit monitoring services for two years plus coverage up to a million dollars I think if your ID was stolen to restore it.

That would be a step in the right direction. Still, I think more needs to be done, and even think it should be mandatory. The government established the FDIC not only to ensure faith in the banking system, but also because using banks was almost a necessity to do business of any kind, so it needed protections. The same thought process should be behind our data. If we're forced to be digital and entrust companies and other organizations to secure our data, we should not be the ones left holding the bag when our information is compromised.

I'd feel more sorry for anyone who's identities may have been stolen as a result of the breach. Sure, nothing can ever be 100% secure. At the same time, this can destroy lives and therefore, I think we need better protections and companies should be liable for damages.

With my life as it is I do not worry about my personal info as it is my stuff is all over the place and come what my I just gotta hope it will all be all right, I sure hope for you your ID doesn't get stolen but companies should have some kind of protection screen or something if anything happens. The responsibility is al theirs,

Good point. Half the time we have no option about the details we have to hand over.
