Two Cards

My dad loves funny cards, and when he gives me birthday cards, they are usually funny too. Incidentally, my mom’s were always sweet and caring. Anyway, the thing with him is that he never wrote in the cards. In his head, I might want to use it again so he leaves it unsigned. I told him years ago, if it came from him, I’m not reusing it no matter what, I’m keeping it. So, if he gave one to me with no message, I’d get a pen, hand him the card, and tell him to write something. On occasion, a card I’d get him was so funny he’d want to use it again, and then he’d be disappointed when I wrote in it. I fixed the problem this year. I give him a funny one with no message so he can use it again, and then I get him a sweet one he’ll want to keep. This year, the funny one made him laugh so hard he almost spit out his drink. He’ll definitely use that one again.

My friend used to do the same but with envelopes. He would never write on the envelope or stick the flap down , in case you wanted to use the envelope again….his Mom always told him ….” All the cards I buy come with an envelope “ but he would say …..” yes, but what if you wanted to write a letter to someone, or you had to fill in and return a form….you would need an envelope then “ ……he had a point …

As a kid, giving cards as birthday gift was so common. Now, I don't see that anymore. I can't remember the last time I saw anyone in Nigeria handing out cards as gifts

I keep all the cards I get for years. Sometimes I go and reread them.
