The lengths people go to

We were talking to our ‘Irish’ son today and something he said reminded me of the time Vince was working at a farm machinery place.
It was almost lunchtime and he was sitting in the forklift in the yard across the road from the actual office when he saw a car pull up in front of the building. He knew whose car it was and didn’t feel like meeting the woman as she was quite aggressive and difficult to deal with. So, rather than go back to the office to get his car to come home for lunch, he drove the forklift home. It was only a few hundred yards.
Have you ever gone to considerable lengths to avoid meeting someone?
The photo is mine.

I didn't want to deal with the de facto President of the development one time, and went swimming in an area I don't use typically, so I didn't have to talk to him.

Often especially one of my wifes friends. I avoid her like the plague. I find her far too irritating.

That seems like a smart way to avoid trouble. I’m curious why you mentioned she’s hard to deal with. It’s probably best to steer clear of people like that since they can ruin your day. Hopefully, he can return the forklift and get his car back when he gets home from work.

Someone else in the office probably dealt with her and she would have been gone by the time he got back.

I love that!
I guess I did that once. About 18 years ago when I lived on the opposite side of the building I’m currently in, I was awakened by screaming outside my window. The people above me had gotten into a fight, and one had locked the other outside at 2:30am. The one locked outside my window was screaming obscenities and threatening to kill the other. More annoyed than alarmed, I called the cops. I could hear them show up, and visit with the couple. When the cops left, I heard the couple start yelling again, rightly blaming me for calling the cops. I wasn’t going to stick around to see their next steps. However, I knew because of what I could hear of their business, as soon as I stepped outside, they’d be aware, and would most likely be waiting for me on the landing when I came up my stairs (I lived below the main level).
So, I left my apartment, walked behind my apartment building, two breezeways over, up THOSE stairs, then got in my car and drove away. As I was pulling out of my space, I saw them peak around their breezeway, caught totally off guard by my avoidance plans.

I have walked around farther than I needed to.

I can’t say I’ve ever used heavy machinery as an escape route, but I think most of us have done the classic “pretend not to see them” or suddenly remembered we needed something in the opposite direction.

beautiful picture. One Christmas I used my boyfriend as excuse to not go to a Christmas party that my uncle's friend had. My uncle's friend was a not a good man.

Nothing like that, but I did once leave a cart of groceries just sitting there. I left the store when I saw my ex in the produce section.

Picturing Vince driving the forklift home gave me my morning laugh.
Offhand I can't say there is anyone that I've gone to such lengths to avoid but I'm sure there has been at some time or another,

I had a "friend" who became intrusive.
He used to walk to my workplace and his eyes used to fixate on documents I was dealing with.
One day, I had gone out and he sat in my room while I was away.
I had to tell him it was very inappropriate.
I avoided him after that and one day I saw him from a distance and backtracked to avoid him!
He should have seen me and got the message loud and clear!
