And the month ends. And, somewhere in the beautiful recesses of the Rocky Mountains, TeamFreak is going, “Oh, yeah. Duh.”
Tons of Beatles references in songs, but this one tops the list.
#1: Never Been to Spain - Three Dog Night
Every time I mention Hoyt Axton I have to quote that line at the end of the Mitchell episode of MST3K: “Oh, Hoyt, how could you!”
(Axton wrote the theme to the movie, which was obviously bad enough to be riffed by the MST3K gang.) Of course, when you write songs like “Lion in the Winter,” “Joy to the World,” and this one, people (and robots) would question the need for money to stoop that low.
The not-so-well-remembered Hoyt Axton song that Three Dog Night recorded. The obvious one is “Joy to the World,” which was the #1 song of 1971. This did make the top ten, but if you’re going to hear a song Hoyt Axton wrote on the radio it’s not going to be this one.
Now for your shock. The first version of this song I ever heard wasn’t Three Dog Night’s…nor Hoyt’s. It was Ronnie Sessions, who did a country cover version in 1972. I fell in love with it then. And I still love it now.
Thanks for reading.

Oh. Of course. I thought this was a way superior song to "Joy to the World." Maybe that's just me.

I agree this is a much better song. But the other one made Hoyt rich so he probably cried all the way to the bank.

@FourWalls - He wrote plenty of great songs. I'm sure he wasn't hurting for money.

@teamfreak16 — yeah, you could do worse than having an ex-Beatle and Steppenwolf raiding your discography….

True in a lot of cases. Might have to do an Elvis cover thing for next month (August).

That’s a great pick to close out the month. “Never Been to Spain” is one of those songs that kind of sneaks up on you simple on the surface, but really memorable once it gets in your head.

Yes indeed! It’s effective is like the song itself…starts slowly and quietly, then next thing you know you’re singing it all day.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m like Scott, I think this is a far better song than “Joy to the World.”
