Oh, boy, is this one going to be fun. Today our jukebox plays another country song…but you think the singer isn’t country. Well, you’re right. But not really. Confused? Me too. Let’s sing with the jukebox. Little Old Wine Drinker Me - Dean Martin He may not have been the best-known or most popular member of the Rat Pack, but Dean Martin was certainly the most musically versatile. Would you ever think of Sinatra doing a country album? Ha, Dean did at least five of them. Must have been singing western songs in that John Wayne movie he made (Rio Bravo). This was indeed a country song (if you can’t tell by the title ). The first recording of the song was by country singer Charlie Walker (best known for “Pick Me Up on Your Way Down” and known to people who’ve seen the Patsy Cline biopic Sweet Dreams as the man who played Hawkshaw Hawkins). Robert Mitchum, the actor and singer (he had a big hit with “The Ballad of Thunder Road”), also recorded it before Martin got around to it. Martin’s version was a modest pop hit (Mitchum’s version was a top ten country hit but flopped on the pop chart). Martin could sing just about anything he put his mind to. A country song about drinking one’s troubles away was right up his alley. Little Old Wine Drinker Me Written by Snuff Garrett, Hank Mills, and Dick Jennings Recorded by Dean Martin From Welcome to My World, 1967 JUKEBOX LYRICS: I’ll ask the man behind the bar for the jukebox

I don’t, but I’m thinking either “That’s Amore” or “Houston.” (Even though Houston is further away from you than Los Angeles is! )

It turns out I have heard this song, but not by him, I don't think. I would have sworn I did not know it, until I gave it a listen. He covered a lot of territory there: California, Chicago, and Tennessee. Well traveled in the song.

He has a nice voice and very relaxing. Have you write anything about Beatles and Bon Jovi?

I did all Beatles/McCartney last month for Sir Paul’s birthday. And, no, I’ve never done Bon Jovi because that era of music isn’t to my liking. I read a story a couple of years ago, though, about Bon Jovi coming across a person in crisis on a bridge over the Cumberland River in Nashville, Tennessee, and he talked the person out of doing something terrible. I highly respect him for that.

Oddly enough, I saw more of Dean growing up than the others, he was so funny in his TV show.

My favorite ever was when he jumped on the piano and it collapsed on him. (Thankfully that’s on YouTube.)

Wow! I like his voice. I often watched his movies in the tv before where he mostly sung.

We had one of his country albums (Dean “Tex” Martin), as well as a greatest hits pop album, when I was a kid. He had a variety show on TV when I was little, and I could stay up and watch it in the summer (it was on at 10 PM, which was past my bedtime during school).
