Tomato products wrongly labelled / myLot

One of our TV programmes is Four Corners which investigates all sorts of topics. One of the latest has seen them forensically testing dozens of tomato products which are claimed to be from Australia but have been 98% proven to be from China. Half were sourced from Xinjiang, an area known to use forced labour. Most of Leggo’s tomato paste products, whether in tins, cans or bottles, were found to have misleading labels. Aldi’s home brand, Remano paste, also failed. Source Certain, a leading forensic laboratory, analysed 221 products from 39 brands. Each food has a unique chemical make-up, left behind by the soil, water and climate of its place of origin. The photo is mine.

I know that most tomato paste and canned tomatoes and salsa come from China, from polluted areas and from areas that use forced labour. I do not use a lot, I buy products coming from Sicily, expensive, but I can taste the difference.

@xFiacre You are right, but believe me that those tomatoes from Sicily have a different taste. I miss those of my garden.

That would upset me greatly. I mean when told where our food comes from, they should at least tell the truth about the continent!

I have seen spraying of insecticides/pesticides on tomato plants. It was quite worrying to think we are consuming the end product. I am sure western countries have good checks and balances to make sure they are not harmful to us.

I wonder if that happens here ever. Probably not right now with all the stuff going on, but it's possible it's happened, I guess.

Everything is from China these days Why companies still trying and hide that stuff is of Chinese origin beats me. Australia though, tomatoes products, that is surprising. Surely it can't be that much cheaper to import Chinese tomato products down under and then manufacture them and claim the product is from Oz

I wouldn't be surprised if all of us are dealing with the same mislabeling of products. I find it very interesting to read that they can tell by the soil, water and climate where it's from.
