Mom had a lot .... ok, to me a lot .... of turtles, probably in the neighborhood of about 10 by 2010. She named this one Otto, she said she knew he was a he because of his red eyes and as far as I was concerned that was ok by me. As for me, I got the impression he was a he because he was fearless and actually intimidated her cat Max.
But he would let Max eat some of the food mom put out for them but he wasn't going to let Max eat too much.
Does anyone know thinks about the desert box turtle?

We always kept one or two turtles during the summer when I was growing up. We fed them out of the garden and released them late in the summer so they had time to dig a borough before it got cold.

One of our local meteorologists has a turtle and a tortoise for pets! I remember when I was a kid they’d let the little ones ride those giant turtles at places in Florida. They probably don’t now because of insurance, and there’s no telling what it may have done to the turtle!

Mom found the original turtle in 1963 and as of 2010 it was still alive and healthy but my sibling gave all the turtles away to someone without telling me about it first. The original one was 52 yrs old but never got that big, I doubt box turtles get really big.
