It’s been on my mind to write about how some diseases are seen as only affecting a particular age group. There have been two news stories recently where bowel cancer and stroke have been misdiagnosed in younger people. These conditions are seen as more the province of the elderly but that is not always the case.
Even when the person themselves feel that something is very, very wrong, their concerns are not being taken seriously by their doctors. The medical profession ‘assumes’ that some diseases are primarily found in older age groups but such assumptions are proving very costly and even fatal for those with such conditions.
In several myLot discussions recently, I’ve been reading ‘listen to your own body’ and that is surely good advice.
The photo is mine and obviously has little to do with the discussion.

Here where I live I've noticed that many of the doctors I've had to trust to give me a physical that my insurance requires have no clue what they're doing but because they are in debt with student loans they start prescribing meds especially to the elderly and do very little to actually help an elderly person. I hate to think what they're doing to young adults

I've had one or two doctors that think the elderly are really past their use-by date and just have to put up with whatever aches and pains they might be having.

Doctors tend to discount the fact that young people can have strokes. It's certainly a nasty thing to happen.

It's probably easier for us to access another doctor if we're not happy. I think maybe you're tied to certain practitioners because of the insurance issue.

The truth is that, in particular, cancer cells are always present in our bodies and may appear to be ignored because our bodies do not view them as an enemy of the body. They remain asymptomatic for the majority of our lives until we we reach old age, at which point they begin to thrive and destroy us, which is why doctors are typically more vigilant when we enter our senior years.

I'm sure that's true but if a young person is truly worried about their symptoms, doctors should perhaps pay more attention to their concerns.
