Junk removal took stuff I didn’t want to get rid of

I had junk removal people come today to take away all the junk. When they went into the basement to pick up something to throw away I showed them the alcohol I had in the top portion of the wall bar. I wanted to get rid of all the bottles there. They said yes so I told them to take them all. I was standing there watching them take stuff out but then left upstairs so I wasn’t in the way when more guys came downstairs. Big mistake that was. After the junk removal people left and I went to the basement I saw a door slightly open in the bottom of the bar. It was closed before. I opened it all the way to find empty shelves. They should’ve had stuff there. Stuff I never intended to throw away. There should’ve been a beer glass, four or six (forget exact #) small coffee cups with saucers, and a Tiffany box with two glasses inside (my wedding gift). There was also a small champagne bottle there from my wedding with my wedding label on it. And another one from my cousin’s wedding. I can’t believe they took that stuff. All I asked them to do was take the alcohol I showed them. I never told them to open the bottom doors and take stuff from there. I called the junk removal guy and told him about it. He managed to find the Tiffany box and one of his workers brought it over. It wasn’t in ideal condition. I didn’t yet unwrap the glasses but I hope they are not damaged. Later, he found the beer glass and the coffee cups and saucers, except he only found two. I wonder where the others went. He dropped them off to me himself. The beer glass seems fine and the coffee cups as well, however, one of the saucers has a small chip on it. I am disappointed that I don’t have the two champagne bottles and all the coffee cups and saucers, but I’m glad that I have some of them back at least, and the beer glass and, more importantly, the Tiffany glasses. I really do hope they’re not damaged. I wish I had never left the basement. They wouldn’t have taken that stuff on my watch. Lesson learned. Either stay with them the whole time they are taking stuff out or do not have stuff you’re keeping in the same place as the stuff you’re throwing away. Oh, and they did a little damage to the wall when they were taking down the dresser from the third floor. They were careful but not careful enough. I thought they were gonna completely take it apart before taking it down the stairs to the first floor. All they did was remove the doors and drawers. The total of the junk removal was $525. That seems like a lot, but they took a lot of stuff away. It would’ve been a pain in the butt, trying to get sanitation to take it all.

You should have supervised every single movement that they made Lena It seems like a lot of money right enough

@Ineeddentures well at least they were all doing stuff in the same place. If some were working on one thing and others on another there’s no way I would’ve been able to babysit both.

I'm glad you got back at least some of the stuff. And the fact that they found some of it and brought it back to you tells me that it may have been an honest mistake, and not intentional theft. But who knows. If I had junk removal people, movers, cleaners or other strangers in my house, I would make sure to watch them all like a hawk. Too many dishonest people in the world.

@lovebuglena That's good that you had a reputable guy in this situation, even though it sounds like mistakes were made.

I have movers coming tomorrow. I would have preferred that they just take the furniture and all the other things we’ll get someone we know to help us move in their car. My mom’s friend did that a few times already. But because some stuff is heavy my mom wants the movers to take it. Honestly, I’m against that because I don’t wanna lose stuff and I don’t want stuff to get damaged.

The head guy of the junk removal was recommended by our realtor. He’s definitely a reputable person or the realtor would not have recommended him.

Wow, people here will remove stuff for free if you give it to them. There are always families in need with furniture and furnishings with flooding, fires, tornadoes and such. That sounds like a total ripoff to charge for picking junk up. Salvation Army, Goodwill and other charitable organizations pick up for free also.

@lovebuglena Still would have been free pickup with charitable organizaiton. They have big trucks for picking up and would have made multiple trips. So did they take all of this stuff to the dump?

@kareng I have no idea what they do with the stuff they take away. Charitable organizations do take stuff, but if you have actual garbage/junk, I don’t think they would take that.

That would have ticked me off too. In fact, I’m upset just reading about it.

I keep blaming myself. If I had not left the room this wouldn’t have happened. If I had said only take stuff from upper part of bar it wouldn’t have happened, etc.

That does sound like a lot of money ….yeah, next time….if there is one …..either stay with them, or box things up so they know it’s only boxes to remove, nothing else.

If there is ever junk removal again I will make sure good stuff is not in the same place as the junk.

I guess I'd be more precise in the future. Or stay there and be sure they took only certain things. Junk removal is so expensive nowadays. It's ridiculous. I paid just under $100 to have one old couch moved a few months back.

I'm sorry that happened. When we paid people to help us move from one house to the other, we never left them alone with our stuff, just in case.

This was junk removal but still I should have stayed with them the entire time. I am glad prior to them coming I went through everything in the garage and the things that I was not throwing out I moved them out of there. The only thing that I did not touch in the garage that I wanted to keep was leftover tile from the bathrooms and the kitchen. There was no way I’d be able to take them out of the garage. When they came, I specifically showed them the tiles and told them not to touch that. If I had left some of the stuff I wanted to keep in the garage. They probably would’ve thrown it out and I wouldn’t even notice. They were working fast.

@lovebuglena Oh, yup! Things you show them not to touch, are normally safe. I'm sorry they threw out stuff you did want to keep.

@DaddyEvil Thanks. Perhaps I should’ve asked the guy for my wedding champagne bottle. Perhaps it was still intact. Too late for that.
