Where things stand for Bob

Bob seems to be getting a little more coherent. A little more hungry. Yet he still is missing lots of pieces in his lifeskills..
He and I have talked. I am not 100% sure what he understands, but he has been positive about the idea of living with the other old soldiers. I am seeking to move him to the Kansas Veteran's Home in Winfield, Kansas. He likes the idea of physical therapy, and more things to do. He tells me he is social.
They will be better able to care for him than I am, and I can visit. It is more than an hour away from here, and I hate that.
They have a locked or closed Alzheimer's unit. There is a courtyard that is fenced so they can go outside safely. He will get physical therapy and other therapies and care on site. They will take him to his appointments, draw his labs there.
In addition to celebrating all the customary holidays, they celebrate military holidays as well. Bob has told me that being in the Army was the most fun part of his life, except he did not have a wife.
Monday is his care assessment meeting, here at the house, to determine if this is indeed a good placement for him. When it is all complete and my DPOA is approved, I can move him there at any time.
I am very sad, and yet it has to be done. I have five medical appointments and treatments that I need for myself, that I cannot get done and care for him full time. If he goes down to the ground or floor, I cannot pick him up. If he is confused, I usually can settle him for now, or wait him out.I spend a lot of time waiting.
I spend all of my time trying to make him better, and that will not happen. I cannot take him anywhere because I cannot get him back into the house when we are done, unless he wants to do it.
It is after noon. I am still waiting for him to wake up. And I am sad.

What a hard life change this is for you...but it does seem you are making the right choices for Bob and for you. You can't physically get him up if he falls, or as you said, get him back in the house without help. You've done your very best, the VA does sound as if it is a positive environment for him. As you said, it is an hour away so that part isn't good. Do you know anyone in the city/town the VA is in, that would let you stay a night with them if you needed to? Just thoughts here...
This is a giant life change for both of you. Big hugs and prayers, Heather.

No, I would stay in an inexpensive hotel. In fact that is somewhat of my plan to go one day and stay over night and be there the next day as well. It is an interesting small community. My sister in law grew up in the area.

Before he lost his memory he told me he felt like he was letting me down. In some ways the feeling is mutual. I keep learning hard life lessons.

Thank you. I wish I had been able to quit work sooner so we would have made more memories.

I;m sorry..it is a dreadful decision.
However, you know you are doing the right thing. It sounds like Bob is on board too.

I think he probably is on board. It will remain to be seen the first night he is there without me.

My heart goes out to you both Heather
I think the Kansas Veterans Home would be best for Bob and best for you
It's difficult , I know
But you need to be able to look after yourself as well as look after Bob.

In some aspects they are equipped to do a better job. But he is still my sweetie.

In many ways it will be better, because physically it is set up better. On the other hand I will not be there round the clock and he will feel a bit lost.

Thank you Barbara, actually I know a choir anthem on that theme. I bet I can find it on You Tube.

Thank you. I just hurt for him being alone. He was lonely before we met. He has told me that he can make new friends and that he is social, but he also said the bad thing about when he was in the Army was that he did not have a wife.

I actually believe it will be good for him. When I talked with admissions and toured with her, it seems they can be very flexible with sleeping and meal times. She pointed out that I am trying to do this all alone and if he is there there will always be people who can tap in.

Just now
Virtual hugs, I know how you feel, and I'm sorry you must be parting but you can see him, and if he will be better off and happier, then that is the way to go. Will you go back to work in some way after that?
