Why do women stay in an abusive marriage?

Our new house maid, Edith, is married to our former staff, Michael. Michael, according to my sister was a good and honest employee. Edith used to work in Qatar but had to come home upon learning from her own daughter that her husband was having an affair. When sister learned she was coming home, she immediately offered a job to Edith. Michael isn't just a womanizer but a gambler, and would physically abuse Edith and her children too. According to her, she's staying for the sake of her children. I wonder if the children think the same way.

Women wouldn't choose to be with this type of a man if they didn't have issues of their own. They don't leave because they don't understand they need to expect better treatment. This kind of life is all they know. It takes time for them to realize they deserve better to be brave enough and strong enough to leave. And, the fellow is feeding them full of BS that isn't true so there is a lot of confusion too.

@celticeagle Same. I would never allow anybody to abuse me physically. And I know my siblings wouldn't want that too.

Yeah, the husband doesn't work anymore and he doesn't like it that the wife stays at home so Edith is working. And the moment she gets home after work, the husband isn't there anymore. He's out partying with friends and would come home very late.

the children will feel the same fear or they are already feeling it so, it would be better for her to leave with children but i am aware that is not so easy also, us, women are always afraid what others will say, it depends will she get the support of her friends and family, is she financially stable to walk away. what a disgrace of a man. i must confess my own story and that is that my father once pushed my mother but she didn't have anyone to confide to. her parents were deceased, my father's family didn't like her and through his passive aggressive jokes which, as a child i didn't realise back then, he didn't like her too but why, not sure. did he think she was smarter than him, more positive than him. here and especially at the countryside, there is a strong sense of patriarchy. as a child, i thought my father was cool, always fooling around but he wasn't. he never invested time with me, always throwing new obligations to my mum's side but he was jelaous when we mentioned her a lot, saying good things about her and i felt uncomfortable seeing that hateful look in his eyes. also, i was a first year at college when this happened and i remember my mother was upset but our whole family dynamics was to act like nothing happened and we did that with many things, sadly. long story short, she is still married to him and i think she talks to him now and then. he just sits on his couch and she is doing everything in the house.also, he never bought her or even wished her a happy anniversary and i never heard in that hosue words of love. he was and is a selfish man who lived only for his job and when he retired, then suddenly he had some illnesses and is again angry and self-centered; it all revolves around him. i hated coming home and absorbing his negativity. i was faking as my mother as well but since last year, i finally stopped. i cut him off and mother too cause, for too long i was her emotional support. as for me. beacuse of him, i fell in love with men who were only just talk and who were jolly but never serious and never would help me when things get tough and were mean to me. i haven't experienced a true, gentle love or a respect cause, i was only looking how my mother was people pleasing. therefore, when parents say they are staying for children, they better not, in my opinion and they should stop lying to everyone, including themselves. cause, they/we all suffer together and unneccessarily.

It seems that you have a narcissist father. To make the children as an excuse to stay in an unhealthy marriage is never a good thing. Because it's never good for the children at all. But I hope her kids will use this as a motivation to do better in life and to find a better husband than their father someday.

@toniganzon he really is.and he had audicity to say once or twice that i should know i am loved.loved?the last time i cried in front of him,he didn't hug me,only suggested me to take a pill, saying the pill should do.and that was it.take it or leave it. You are right,it is an excuse and Edith deserves someone and something better, not this.

This is something I will never understand. Children are always their excuse to stay.

I would let my child suffer in such kind of marriage. I would leave. But my sister told me, when you are poor, you have to endure and as a child you have to be strong, study hard, and swore to not be like your parents.

@toniganzon - Often the problem is that those women have no education, they do not have a job and they are obliged to stay because they could be unable to maintain their kids.

My first wife was abusive. I stayed with her because I didn't think I'd be able to see Pretty anymore if I got divorced from her mom. Finally, I couldn't take any more so started getting divorced. It took over seven years before I won full custody of Pretty. I'm sure some women are just like me and scared they won't be able to see their kids anymore if they get divorced.

I don't think that's the case with Edith. She could take all the kids with her actually. They'r not that young anymore. They're old enough to choose who they want to be with.

@DaddyEvil I don't know either too. She's 11 years older than her husband. She's not young anymore and probably she just accepts it that way.

@toniganzon Then I don't know why she'd stay with an abusive person.

That’s such a painful situation. I can understand why you’re wondering about the children too. Staying together “for the children” doesn’t always mean the children are actually better off, especially when there is violence and abuse at home. They may even carry those painful memories with them for years. I’m glad Edith at least has a job and some support from your sister. Hopefully, having her own income and people who care about her will give her more choices and, most importantly, a safer life for herself and her children.

She even had higher income when she was working in Qatar but the money she sent to him only went to other women and her husband has an illegitimate child.

@toniganzon That makes the situation even more heartbreaking. She was working hard in Qatar and sending her earnings home, only to find out that her husband was spending the money on other women and even had a child outside their marriage. She must have felt so betrayed after sacrificing so much for her family. It’s really sad that she also had to endure abuse on top of all that. Hopefully, having her own job now will give Edith more independence and strength to make the best decision for herself and her children.

Women stay in abusive relationship because of a lot of reasons..their kids, economic advantage, fear of the unknown..and so on
