Hey, wasn’t this guy in yesterday’s countdown? Yeah, but that’s SOOO last month.
We’ve gone Hollywood! You can’t go to L.A. without going to Hollywood, so we’re visiting both this month. The only shock here is that this isn’t in the top ten, right? Oh, wait until you see that top ten!
Candle in the Wind - Elton John
Try to forget that you’ve heard this song a million times. Try to forget that weird feeling you had when you heard this between “Love Lies Bleeding” and “Bennie and the Jets” on side one of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (talk about a song misplaced on a record!). Instead, try to remember the agony of what it must have been like to be Marilyn Monroe. The overdoses of press and flashbulbs and scandals was a barbiturate overdose waiting to happen.
I mentioned earlier this week that Gardner McKay was originally picked to play opposite Monroe in Something’s Got to Give, and he turned it down. The role went to Dean Martin, but the film was never finished because “Marilyn was found in the nude.”
I like that this song doesn’t go into all the conspiracy theories surrounding her and the Kennedys. It just is a wide-eyed boy “in the 22nd row” enjoying a movie. Maybe that’s how we should treat all our celebrities.
Candle in the Wind
Written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin
Recorded by Elton John
From Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, 1973
HOLLYWOOD LYRICS:
Hollywood created a superstar and pain was the price you paid

@FourWalls Should I spare myself the "other version?" I had not known about that.

Years ago, I went to an Elton John concert that was here at the Assembly Hall. Long, long time ago...my sweet Aunt wanted to attend and she got tickets and took sister and I.
Thanks for giving me another ''fantastic memory'' moment.
I don't think Marilyn had a happy life, and it ended way too soon. No one will ever really know her feelings or thoughts...but when she needed help, no one was really there for her.

That’s true today, too, but back then, emotional illness wasn’t talked about or recognized.
