We’re staying in the L.A. area when it comes to home bases for singers for today’s Hollywood side of the dual countdowns celebrating Southern California. I’ll dedicate today’s Hollywood song to Oscar-winner Eva Marie Saint (“She looks like Eva Marie Saint in On the Waterfront” — Lloyd Cole, “Rattlesnakes”), who passed away yesterday at the age of 102. Heart of Gold - Neil Young AND, since John Roberts is back, I have to announce that Linda Ronstadt’s singing backup on this song! (She also sang backup on the other hit from this album, “Old Man.”) This was Neil Young’s only #1 single in America. In fact, out of all of the solo, collaborative, and group mixtures of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, only Young had a #1 hit. This was perfect stuff for the “introspection” singer/songwriter era of the early 70s. I loved that era of music, and I still do. Now, after you’ve enjoyed this song and the L.A. song for the day (“I Love L.A.” by Randy Newman), you can discuss among yourselves who has the lesser singing voice. Yeah, but both guys are fabulous. Heart of Gold Written by Neil Young Recorded by Neil Young From Harvest, 1972 HOLLYWOOD LYRICS: I’ve been to Hollywood, I’ve been to Redwood

Yeah, I’d have to agree. I remember a comedian spoofing this song: “I wanna live, I wanna give, I’d pay a fortune for a normal voice.”

Great tune, I've always thought he has a strange pitch but it sounds good here.

Heart of Gold is such a good pick, that harmonica gets me every time. I love that early 70s sound too, nothing else feels quite like it. And Randy Newman's voice is rough but I wouldn't change a thing about it.
