A modern twist to eating on banana leaves

It's traditional to use banana leaves to serve food. It used to be common historically, but now it's limited to serving food at some weddings etc. Traditionally, the whole banana leaf is placed on the table or floor and food is served on it. After you eat the food, it's folded and disposed. A lot of restaurants practice this modern version of it where the banana leaf is cut to the shape of the plate and food is served on it. It's a good reminder of the practice, but feels very different from the original practice. Have you ever eaten food served on a banana leaf or something different?

It depends on the region where the food comes from, but in my country it is typical to use banana leaves.

This reminds me of dolmathes- rice and ground meat and spices wrapped in grape leaves. It's Greek food.

My Mum would rinse of grape-vine leaves and wrap our lunchtime sandwiches in them. It kept the sandwiches fresh until it was time to eat.

Never eaten off a whole banana leaf but I would love to try it one day. Sounds way better than a plate cut to shape, that kinda kills the whole point. Something about eating the old way just makes the food feel more special.

I have never even seen a banana leaf, what an interesting tradition. I rarely go to restaurants, mostly I cook whatever I am going to eat and I keep it simple, it was cooked in a pot or pan or whatnot and that is what I use instead of a plate.
