Got Stood Up For Dinner

I am a bit annoyed today. Came back home and walked the dog after my shift. Around 6 o’clock my husband texted me to say his friend wanted to eat out with him today. And that he’s already at the restaurant waiting for him.
I do like that he is socialising but I don’t appreciate being told in the last minute like it’s nothing. Usually it would be good to plan it ahead so I can think of dinner arrangements for myself. I feel like it is very inconsiderate to just cancel our family dinner like that. It’s not like he’s a teenager he’s a married man.
Am I overreacting or is it common Western practice?

That will land you in the doghouse here. Don’t let anyone tell you that’s an accepted thing. You best call ahead and tell me your plans. You want to eat with a friend? You call and ask if it would cause a problem to do so, and you okay it with the wife and vice versa if it were a woman. In no circumstances do you tell your wife you’re already at the restaurant so that’s that.
I’m trying to picture my sister’s reaction, and it would not be pretty.

Yeah he will be in trouble when he gets home. I do not want this to be a regular occurrence. I find it very disrespectful and inconsiderate and I also had quite a bad day and was looking forward to dinner conversation where I can vent. I am not a cafeteria I am a person.
This friend of his I really am not a fan of. Always so inconsiderate and so last minute. And mind you this friend is married too. I wonder how his wife felt about tonight.

@AmbiePam well now he texts me saying sorry and telling me his friend divorced. I couldn’t help but say “I’m not surprised”. I mean if you are this inconsiderate wife will get fed up too. I hope he does not keep making surprise dinners with my husband now that he’s divorced.

I did discuss this to him on his arrival and told him next time give me prior notice as it is not nice and I feel to be honest abandoned.

It’s definitely not common practice in the UK. I’m shocked he isn't dashing back to see you every night! Is the honeymoon over? Oh dear.
Maybe his friend was in need of a friend and your hubby felt obliged?
Hopefully he won’t let you down again.

His friend was too excited to chat with him about his divorce. He thought he told me but he didn’t. I was really grumpy when he returned last night and I told him that next time he be more considerate and prioritise family. He does not have a lot of friends and if he advised me sooner I would’ve been more than fine.
I don’t appreciate his friend just whisking him away like that without prior notice. Just because he is now single and has no one waiting around for him doesn’t mean he could take my husband
I am sorry to be a nag.

@flapiz Yeah, let’s hope he isn’t trying to convince your husband about the benefits of being single and persuading him to go on more nights out. You’ll have to put your foot down with a firm hand.

Well apparently his friend just undergone divorce and I guess he wanted to share it with a man. Whatever the reason was I was really upset and I let him know soon as he got home. He did apologise profusely.

That is inconsiderate. Of course things do come up at short notice, we all understand that, and I can see he would want to stand by his friend in a difficult time, but the least he could do would be to contact you as soon as his friend asked him, and just say 'Do you mind if I don't eat with you tonight?'

Exactly I needed him to ask instead of just go. I do not own him and I would probably let him go but not just say I am going and that’s it. So at least I could manage my expectations.
I am a person set on my ways and I really don’t like last minute changes.

NO, your are not overreacting and it's not at all a common Western practice. Not here in Italy for what I know. My husband would have told his friend to have dinner together another day, when he could inform me in advance. Well, my husband usually declined if I was not also invited.

I said something and he did apologise. I said to him that I was looking forward to dinner conversation and I felt a bit betrayed and told him next time to give me more notice.
Initially I felt bad for his divorced friend but then I found out he is happily divorced. I think he is not a very good influence on him but I trust my husband will be more mindful next time.

I gave him a piece of my mind when he returned last night. I’d rather say something and nip this inconsiderate behaviour in the bud.
