http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20070608.PUPPY08/TPStory/National This guy, or I should say scum of earth cut his puppies ears off to make it look meaner. How could people do this? Unfortunately the laws here are very lax when it comes to animal cruelty. If he's found guilty he could serve only a maximum of six months in jail and/or receive a $2,000 fine, as well as a two-year ban on owning an animal. I think it should be at least a lifetime ban on owning animals, or even better, cut his ears off. I hope people will call their local MP's here in Ontario, and try to get these laws changed. What motivates people to do this?

It is shocking just how much animal cruelty that goes on, I think you make a really valid point, but what I was going to say was that so often it is the cute, pet like animals that get the attention, and deservedly so, but what about all those animals that are reared for our food, so very many live in squalid conditions and face cruelty that seems to go unreported. All animals deserve to have the right to a cruel free life. Let us hope that that person gets his cumuppance.

disgusting. why do people think they can mutilate dogs ears and tails just because they like the way it looks. and then they call it ear "cropping" or tail "docking" to try and draw attention away from the fact it's mutilation.

There's a big difference between tail docking and chopping a puppies ears off with a knife.

not to me. both are cosmetic and unnecessary, and cruel. I fail to see how severing part of the spine can ever be considered humane if it's for a non-medical reason. dogs should have tails. dogs should have ears.

You think a surgical procedure is the same as chopping a body part off with a kitchen knife?

i feel sad even if i find cuts on my dog's body. i am already very worried to where she got it and how. and this person intentionally cut the ears of his puppy? that's cruelty! how sad for the puppy to undergo such an event in his life so he'll look meaner. i mean, where's the sense of it all? we raise pets to love them and not do them harm. i wish laws will be implemented and higher laws on this will be passed not only in your country, but in our country, too (philippines)... anne

I think altering the appearance of an animal regardless of the location of the operation is animal cruelty. There is no difference. His knife may have been sharper than a scalpel and he may have used a pain killer. MOST people would not recognize a Doberman pincer if they saw one. They look like black and tan c00n dogs.

exactly. ear cropping, tail docking. even if they go to sleep and wake up mutilated without any pain, it's cruel. I'd recognise a Doberman. luckily ear cropping is illegal in the UK, but tail docking isn't yet. we are starting to see more rotties and dobies with tails in the UK now, which is lovely. Boxers too. and Spaniels. they have lovely tails, with beautiful silky feathering. it suits them to have a tail. my auntie used to have a weimerana b*tch and it was hearbreaking seeing her trying to cover herself with her poor mutilated tail when she was getting unwanted attention from the boys. and if a dog has drop ears, it's for a reason. to keep dirt and insects and so on out. when a dog has pricked ears, the ears have more of a design to protect the inner ear properly. cropped dogs don't have that. and I think they look awful. dobies and boxers and great danes look strange with cropped ears. it's not how they are meant to look.

Very true. They need their ear flaps and I think they use their tail for balance. A guy worked with me who had a dog with ears as small as legally possible just because it was a fighting dog. But the dog was not used in fights and never was. Actually I think he stole it from someone who kept it in a small room that was dark most of the time and trying to make it mean.

How cruel is that... but then I think having a doberman's ears cut for human vanity and cutting a dog's tail because it gets in the way is pretty moronic. Even that idiotic poodle cut people give show poodles is ridiculous. My dog has a really long strong tail. She can knock over a full cup of coffee wit it, BUT she can also really express happiness with it. I love seeing her tail waving back and forth when she is pleased with something, or just excited. It is like a smile.

Read the newspaper story. The guy cut off his dogs ears because he thought he would make it look mean. No freezing, no vet, nothing.

still for the same reason though. basically he wanted cropped ears, and didn't bother getting it done by a so called professional. if the culture of mutilating ears and tails for appearence didn't exist, he'd probably not have thought of it.

That's just awful. I wish they would do the same to him as punishment....sorry, I'm not in Ontario but if I were I would attempt to help...although I wonder if our laws in the US are any better or even more lax when it comes to animal cruelty.

it is so cruel... i can't imagine why people can get so heartless nowadays... animals also have the right to be treated properly as they are a living thing as well... like us... what make people think that they can abuse animals unneccessarily and then get away with it??? it is so infuriating... i hope the guy get the maximum punishment that he deserves...

You are on exactly the same wavelength as me my good friend that is exactly what I'd do, I'd cut the scum's ears off see how he feels, it's disgusting that small sentences are given out, it sends the wrong message across to say hey it's ok to do this to animals, well it's not. Two year ban is a joke, it should be a lifetime ban, these people are sick and should also be locked up and the key thrown into the deepest ocean!

Did you know that sheep ranchers dock the tails of the sheep. It is to keep the wool in that area fairly clean. They put a tiny rubber bad on the tail and cut off the blood circulation until the tail falls off. We have an australian shepard that had her tail docked before we got. The reason given is that she is a working dog. She was bred to herd cattle. The tail was docked so the cattle can't step on it.

We are living in the South Eastern part of of the US. That might have something to do with it. I know When I lived In the western Part of the country the dogs were not docked ether.

So many people are total idiots when it come to pets. I am so glad I do not know this guy because I would go to jail for murder....no torture. I would personally enjoy torturing him.He better get a hefty fine, sit in jail and be banned from owning an animal FOREVER.

That's just horrifying, I'm practically speechless. These laws really need to be made tougher, I can't believe he's going to get away with such a punishment.

That's horrible and disgusting....I hope that guy gets the fullest extent of punishment--a friend told me about this woman she knew...she was a hoarder..collector of pets...the Animal Care And Control would take her pets away from her..but sure enough...she'd start collecting pets again, including dogs..Well the story goes that to keep the dogs quiet, and not make her neighbors aware she had a lot of dogs again, she'd take them to a vet and get their voice boxes removed to keep them quiet--now supposedly this is a legit thing to do...but don't you think that's cruel too?? She should be brought up on animal abuse charges as well

Why don't they cut his ears off just like he did to his puppies and see how he feels. I think that would be poetic justice.

what an evil thing to do. I agree with you 100%. He should have his ears cut off and a few other body parts as well.

There is a big difference in someone doing this without medical instruments or proper medication and having a vet do this. Some standard require this for the animal can be shown and the fancy dog breeder requires that if "they" breed an animal all the surgery and shots be done before placement in their forever home. A vet does this with proper medication "pain" and medical instrument that should minimize the "pain" and discomfort the animal should feel. I don't like an animal should be tortured and yes with out proper vet care for this I feel the animal was tortured.

I think stupidity motivates people to do such cruel things to animals. You hear about people mistreating animals in different ways all the time and it makes you wonder what was done to them to cause them to become this way. I believe as you do that the punishment wasn't severe enough. He shouldn't be allowed to have any more pets, a larger fine, and a larger prison sentence. Maybe then he would think twice before he does something so dang stupid again.
