It will be a 3 layer cake. I haven't decided if I should make the filling with just chocolate ganache or use more than one flavor and make at least 2 layers with different flavors. Maybe one layer would be lemon, not sure. Advice would be welcome!

oh my goodness, kudos to you for making a wedding cake! it's such an honor, and yet i would be such a basket case, trying to make it perfect. BUT i don't like baking too much, so that explains MY end! lol! we had raspberry filling with our yellow cake for our wedding cake. raspberry goes real well with chocolate OR vanilla flavors. lemon usually i believe is a crowd pleaser as well. i love lemon anyway! chocolate ganache, YUMMERS!!!! i do like the idea of doing different flavors for different layers, gives people something to choose from, however, sometimes it's easier NOT to give choices, and they eat what's there. guess it depends on how big the wedding is. but everyone has such different tastes, how thoughtful of you to think to offer choices! what have your son and future daughter-in-law said? do they have any other ideas??? how fun! i wish you much luck!!!

my mom made our wedding cake and I loved it! We had lemon and vanilla as our two flavors. Lemon is my absolute favorite flavor, so that would be my choice, but more importantly, what is your son's favorite flavor and his wife's? I'd suggest getting their feedback and seeing what they might like.

They want chocolate or strawberry. Maybe I should do one of each. That would give a good choice.

My wedding cake was 3 layers. One vanilla, one chocolate and one marble. It was great. There were different flavors for peoples different tastes.

Well first of all, I love lemon. But if it's not your son's favorite-- go for the choclate ganache! Everybody loves chocolate! I had a chocolate wedding cake with raspberry filling and everyone thought it was so unique! Kudos to you for making your son's cake- let us know how it turns out!

This is a really big undertaking, but I can tell that you're a very creative person, so I know it'll turn out great. The chocolate filling sounds delicious, but the fruit filling would be nice in addition. I love lemon, and also strawberry, raspberry, and maybe even banana cream, could be good choices. I wish you all the best with your special project.

Maybe I should save the lemon for another occasion. My daughter loves lemon and her birthday is July 12th!

WoW! That's a task you have chosen to do, l commend you. I think you should consider what is your sons favorite type cake may be and go from there. I think for presentation a white cake with chocolate ganache would look very nice. Good luck and Happy Baking!

cake - a chocolate cake on my birthday
oh. congratulations to your son! anyway, i envy you elusivebutterfly. i always want to bake cakes. but all i'm good at are pancakes. huhuhu... i tried to follow the steps in cooking books but i never had a perfect cake. so, good for you to have such a talent. hmm. let's see. three layered cakes are better than just two. plus having fillings inside it will make it taste better although it will take much time in preparing... good day to you and happy baking!!!... anne P.S. i am eager to see your finished product... hope you post a pic of it here later. thanks!

Honestly my opnion would be to mis the fillings. It would add not just flavor but a way of being diffrent than the others. O think the 1 layor chocolate and another layer lemon sounds great.

I remember you saying in another discussion about making your sons wedding cake. I am not much of a cake baker, so can't offer any advice from a cooking point of view. But from my personal "eating" experience, chocolate & lemon go very well together. This is a big job you are taking on. I guess you have to get it right first yime. BUt you are saving a lot of money doing it yourself. At my second wedding, we just gopt the local supermarket to bake a huge mud cake. Good Luck.

Cool—How nice of you to make the wedding cake. Save them money and be nice to have it made by family- I always have liked cakes with something in them- Makes them much more moist- I prefer raspberry filling in chocolate cake- I’m sure whatever you decide it will be yummy.

Oh, how I wish I could make cakes like that! My stepmom used to make cakes when I was growing up and I learned a little at the time but forgot...I've always wanted to buy supplies to make cakes; perhaps one day I will. I'm sure your son and his bride will dearly love their 'cake made with love.' Congratulations to your family on getting a new daughter.

I'm not sure what ganache is and it's not in my dictionary. To be on the safe side I'd ask the bride. Chocolate all round sounds good to me.

I have been reading the discussion , and I noticed that you mentioned that you are using a cake mix. I can not imagine using a cake mix to make something as important as a wedding cake. If you do a search on Betty crocker.com you should be able to find a good recipe for a pound cake mix. Oh I stand corrected, I guess in the US there are pound cake mixes . I just did a search on http://cdktichen.com . Guess I learned something new from reading this . I think I would stick to the same flavor icing throughout the cake . Hope it turns out well for you . Post a picture for us.

I personally am alwasy against multi flavored cakes. Not everyone will get to try all three flavors. I would go with a safe plane chocolate or vanilla flavore which most people like and make all the cake the same flavors.
