Do you read a book just once?

Do you read a book just once or do you return a few years later and read it again? I re-read my favourite books every few years - many times I get something else out of it - each time I read it - what about you?

Thanks - I keep seeing you and liking your responses! I like that word eventuated, I thought perhaps you were being silly and made up a form of eventual, but I looked it up - thanks for teaching me a new word!

=] I'm pleased that you like my screen name, it was a name I picked out when I was planning on getting a kitten a few months ago, and even though it never eventuated, I became quite attached to the name, so it's become a pseudonym of sorts. =] We seem to becoming quite well acquainted on these discussion boards, thanks for having some interesting topics and opinions. =]

I sometimes re read them especially if they are something pertaining to learning a new skill. I also re read the classics and made my children read all of them.

I think that's great - both why you re-read - and giving your kids all the classics. Have you read Louisa May Alcott? The made one of her books into a movie, Little Women - I think Winona Ryder was in it.

I've listened to books on long walks its really nice. It may be distracting during driving if one's full attention isn't on the road. Unfortunately, even if we're good drivers - we have to compensate for those who just aren't!

I read it a long time ago and didn't see the movie but I think that is a good way to know the story. My daughter listens to books all the time too. While she is driving...she truly enjoys that. I have yet to do it. But plan on it in the near future.

I do enjoy re-reading a book every once in awhile. This usually happens when I want something to read and don't have anything new in the house and no time to go to the library. Then I will go thru my books to find one I haven't read in a few years. When I was in sixth grade I received Little Women as a gift. I read it over and over. Now my kids often re-read books. My daughter re-read all the Harry Potter books in preparation for the release of the newest and last book.

Yes, I enjoyed Louisa May Alcott as a child - especially Little Women.

I reread my books, I try not to borrow books because I know I will want to read the book again in a year or so, so I always try to buy my books and I have a huge collection that I will never get rid of.

I try not to borrow books for the same reason. I do lend them, which leads to the same problem because many times friends and family don't return them or lend them elsewhere!

well, It depends on the interest upon the book. when I read book for 1st time, if I feel that i will read it again, I keep the book in my collection and read it after a interval of 6months-2years. itz fun!!

I used to think that re-reading a book is total non-sense. But I changed my mind one or two weeks ago when a read a very interesting book that I read again and again and I don't know if I'll stop reading it :p

I usually only read a book once. I just can't get into a book after I read it. I am almost the same way with most movies. I guess if I know how its going to end, it just doesn't pull me in as much.

I can understand that. Sometimes though, movies are soooo predictable, you know how its going to end the first time - still enjoyable though...like fight club - sometimes this is okay - its still enjoyable but sometimes, not so much.

Some books I only read once and then forget about them; other books are just too good and I have to re-read them several times - for me it's like visiting an old friend.

I love to re-visit all of the Harry Potter books, a lot of Stephen King stuff since I read most of it when I was a kid, I understand much more of it now that I am an adult. I also re-read historical romances if they have a good story or really great characters like some of Marsha Canham's books, especially the Robin Hood series she wrote; also love Karen Marie Moning, she does time travel romance and the intricate stories are awesome!

I think I have to find that last author - sounds fun. I want to find some alternative earth stories. Maybe we should start a round robin on mylot of books. You know sending books around in a circle. Usually round robins are for letters but...

What books do you re-read several times? I feel the same way - its like visiting an old friend. The same books that you the first time you read, you can't stop reading yet don't want to end.

Hello artemis432, Normally I read the book once and keep it on the shelves *smiles* But, if I really like the story so much, I will re-read one more time after a while. Unfortunately, since I already knew the ending of the story, it always like I will read half and forget to finish it up *smiles* As far I could remember, I never read any books more than twice though I like the story very much.

The books I read more than twice are books I read a few times in childhood - I devoured my moms sci-fi and fantasy starting in fourth grade - and then read a third time as an adult. Thanks gr8life - hope your life is great.

Every time I go to the library I wind up getting a book I haven't read and one I have. And I usually read the one I already read first.

Once in a while, its on purpose. Usually i just stumble across it and think this is a good book. And of course on occasion, i get a book that I forgot I had read.

I read too often, but it doesn't mean that I'm a bookworm. I can read fast, so therefore I spend only a few hours on reading books. Right now I'm trying to ready all stories related to Greek Mythology. Just learn how to read fast, then you can have plenty of time for other chores as well.

Not sure how that pertains to my question but I too read a lot. Only I do consider myself a bookworm. Nowadays, I don't always have the concentration so I may go a few weeks without reading a book - or reading one book on and off. Then go thru a weekend where I read four or five good sized books. As you can tell from my screen name I'm a fan of mythology.

There are a few select books I've read more than once, but as I tend to change interests at the drop of a hat it's rare that I do.

I don’t have the habit to reread the whole book that I had read before. But I would read again or refer to certain pages or paragraphs that I am interested or for certain purposes. For those Chinese classical literatures like The Three Kingdoms, The Water Margin and the classical poetries are among the books that I used to reread for several times. I like to reread and rewrite the ancient poetries of tang dynasty as a practice for my chinese calligraphy daily.

It depends on the type of book am reading. I mean, if it a type of book that I learn alot, I will read it over and over again, but it is a book which is not gainful, I just read it once and dump it. Thanks

Yup I read and reread a few years later. I enjoy it as much the secondtime as the first.I notice that the story is affected by time, and the changes that have taken place since the story was written. Especially si-fi stories.I never read romance fiction. I prefer to do the love-in stuff first hand. THats it I think!
