My sister and I went shopping on Saturday. She has a camera phone and in two different shops we found something that we liked but knew we could make ourselves....so she took pictures of them. She was very shy about doing it but wanted a picture so we didn't forget what they looked like. One was a bag that was decorated so cute for a birthday present and another was a candle holder that a snowman was painted on....I paint on glass. Do you think we were wrong to take pictures of them? We almost felt like thieves stealing someone else's ideas! But on the other hand why buy it if we could do something similar?

I don't think you did anything wrong by taking photos of items you want to make. If you didn't do this, someone else probably would or did. You can make different variations of the items you saw so you won't feel like you're infringing on someone else's ideas. Enjoy making your new projects.

I don't think it was a bad idea if you do make something like what you seen its not like it will be exactly what you say it will have its own unique diffrences. so don't think it is a big deal. you could have been taking the pictures to show someone thats what you want for a present never know.

a couple of years ago when my granddaughter was shopping for a prom dress she took a couple of pictures of the ones she like to get some friends opinion when the shop manager happen to seee her takeing the picks and told her that it wasn't allowed, because the dresses could be copied. Of the pieces that you took the pic of are copiewrited and you wanted to sell your items then it would be wrong. but if you are makeing them for family or for yourself nothing wrong there.

You are not thieves.And I don't think it is wrong to take a picture. What would be wrong is taking the idea and selling it to a big chain like Walmart as your own. But if all you want to do is make a copy for yourself, that's okay. And besides, taking a picture these days doesn't mean you were " stealing " the idea, you could be just taking a picture to show someone which item to purchase.

I don't think you did anything wrong. After all, if you'd seen the same two items in a catalog you could have still made your own. If your able to make your own, why on earth would you buy it...that makes no sense.

Nah, what you did was fine. You btoh have artistic abilities and you just want to be able to do something like it yourself. I, myself, like to draw. And I'm always drawing pictures off the internet or from magazines. It's the same thing...I don't believe I'm doing anything wrong, and neither did you.
Have fun making those things! They sound great! Can I have the bag when you're done? ;P

Yay! hehe.
Can you share the pictures you took in the store so we can see them? Or do you feel uncomfortable about doing that?

We all get inspiration from different places. I mean think of all the fashion designers. They don't always come up with an idea that is original with them. Same as painters. Many Old World painters inspired the later Masters. You didn't do anything wrong. I sometimes get inspired to do things by nature. If it is wrong, then I guess God will take it up with me later, LOL. You're too sweet!

i think there's nothing wrong with taking pictures of it jill. and there's nothing wrong with making something like it too. it only goes wrong when you copy the product and you sell it commercially. i mean, its okay if you will make something like it and intend it for personal use. but to sell it commercially, it would be a crime. it would be like piracy. ^__^;;

My aunt used to be a seamstress at a shirt factory and could sew just about anything just by looking at it. We would go shopping and I would find something that I liked and show it to her. About half the time she would look at it for a few minutes then say, I can make that! We would go find similar material and sure enough, she would have a shirt or skirt or whatever almost like the original and just as good.
