Frozen Bottled Water

I love drinking cold water. What I do is drink about half the bottle of water and put the balance in the freezer. Later in the day I remove the bottle and add tap water. Makes instant ice water. I do this with plastic bottles and will use the same bottle maybe 5-7 days. Ran a Snopes check to make sure this is a safe idea and the results were fine. Does anyone else do this also?

I just got an email yesterday about it...don't do it. From John Hopkins. Says that plastic in the freezer breaks down and you get dixions in the water then. No plastic in the micro wave either especially saran wrap!

I've been drinking water this way for months and months. An article on Snopes said it's safe to reuse the plastic bottle if the hands are kept clean. Bummer, can't find the link but it's on the site. I won't use the styrofoam that comes with "to go" orders when reheating leftovers in the microwave. Thanks for responding.

Here's the article from the Snopes site: http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/petbottles.asp Now I am confused if John Hopkins is saying not to do this procedure. Thanks, carolbee

I got it in a big email that says no chemo necessary...and that is one of the big things! Besides of course eating right and not smoking...etc...that was in a seperate little part of the article....no water bottles in the freezer...I used to do it all the time but my kids told me this so I quit doing it. I also had a bottle in the freezer for when I traveled and did shows..it would take all day for them to melt!

Our tap water is good or I am use to it. I drink both bottled water and tap water on a regular basis. Thanks for responding.

If you drink our water straight from the tap it has an awful chlorine taste but for some reason when it's been frozen it tastes much better. Annie

I do that too. It is the only way I can drink water. I hate warm water so I'm always freezing something. Plus, I know I can take it to the gym and it is still cold while I'm working out.

Me too. The colder the better. My daughter and I reuse the bottles also and fill them up again with tap water and freeze them. I always wash the lip of the bottle before filling it back up and refreezing to make sure we don't spread alot of germs if one or the other grabs a bottle someone else already drank out of.

The secret is keeping the hands clean when handling the bottle. Thanks for responding.

Yes. I wish I could get that through my daughters head. She really does not worry herself too much about cleanliness but I sure stay on her about it. I make her keep things clean whether she wants to or not.

We do this in the summer time because it is so hot in Phoenix. We wash the bottles though after each use. We have even frozen water in a recycled plastic icecream tub and then added water to it for our dogs. It says nice and cold for them all day long.

I know it can be terribly hot in Phoenix in the summer. Our daughter lives about 100 miles north of Phoenix. But Phoenix is a good hot, no humidity. Thanks for responding.

I read an article a couple weeks ago about bottled water. It said not to reuse the bottles more than 2-3 times. Something about what kind of additives are in the plastic bottle. But it was an ANTI-Bottled water article so who knows.

Actually you SHOULDNT reuse that sort of bottle too many times..BUT that being said, I do the same thing with my Propel Water LOL...I have about 5 bottles in my freezer right now each about 1/3 full....that way if I forget to restock the fridge I can always add a room temp bottle to the frozen one and voila!

Isn't it fun and exciting...lol This tells you I have no life. Our tap water is good so I simply add it to the bottle and use for a few days and then discard the bottle and start over. Snopes is saying it's ok to reuse but not for weeks or months. Thanks for responding. http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/petbottles.asp

I started when I was a letter carrier taking a bottle of frozen water with me to work everyday then I'd drink it on the road as it melted. Now I do the same thing when I go to the pool in the summer time. I use the bottle forever! When I get home I fill the bottle again and put it back into the freezer then it's ready for me whenever I need it. Annie

I know how good the water tastes after being in the freezer. I only reuse the bottle for about 5 days and then throw away. Thanks for responding.

I have 3 Propel bottles filled with water sitting in the fridge right now. I add True Lemon or True Lime to the water to flavor it. I put a couple bottles in the fridge when I first wake up and they are slushy by the time I take them out to drink on my route. They last me the couple hours it takes to do my route for now. Come summer, I have a small soft-sided cooler I keep the extras in till I need them on the route. I usually use them a few weeks then toss. I also have several water bottles that I bought for the same purpose.

Used to do this constantly. But now mainly only in the summer. Our freezer is already quite crowded. It is yummy when freezing cold. But the thing I don't like it (or things, if I may complain): 1) When frozen, whenever you put it down anywhere, it leaves big puddles. 2) It's all wet when you hold it, from the evaporating water on edges. 3) It mishapes the bottle also (at least I am thinking of the plastic water bottles that you buy from the store in packs, opposed to real water bottles that are bought to refill). Okay, enough of me complaining. But I do love cold water in the summer.

You are right about the shape of the bottle changing. Once the ice begins to melt, all I do is unscrew the cap and the bottle will go back to it's original shape. I also put the bottle into a huggie so if the bottle sweats, I can feel or see it. Thanks for responding.

That's a good idea. We don't have any huggies (never knew that was the name of the product either). :o) But maybe over the summer we will try that out. "Sweating" is the perfect word you used to describe. I hate when it sweats all over me.

When it is really hot outside my son is allowed to take a water bottle to school the teacher told them to put them in the freezer the night before then it will melt the next day and they will have ice water all day it works really good.

I just freeze the water in the original bottle so I can toss it if I am away from home. The water is still cold in the morning if I take it out of the freezer the night before and drink throughout the evening. Thanks for responding.

Thats a great Idea. I friend of mine when I was in school used to freeze a bottle at night so she would have a cold bottle all day and would just add water throughout the day. The problem for me is that I would drink the whole bottle and not have anything left to freeze. LOL I am thinking that this would be really good for me if I had several bottles going at once.

You can continue to add tap water to the frozen water if you want to keep drinking. One important thing to remember: Snopes suggested to keep the hands clean when handling the bottle over and over again. Thanks for responding.

Oh my goodness!!!! I thought I was the only one that did that LOL. I did this alot until I heard that reusing the plasic bottles were toxic. did you hear anything about that? I can't remember where I heard it. Maybe the news? Anyway I quit doing that after I heard that. I did the same with my pepsi bottles. Love Frozen Ice cold pepsi. Actually Diet Pepsi is what I drink.

Are you aware that not all water bottles are safe to use over and over again? Try to look underneath the bottle, you see a numer right? If it's 1-4- it's not advisable to use it again, if it's 4 and above then its okay. Be careful! ^_^

Something similar but mine is a bigger scale operation LOL. I have like 10-20 bottles in my fridge and they are all filled with boiled water cooled to fridge temperature. So as and when they run out, I will replenish them. And so, I have an endless support of cool water, so to speak.:)

You just reminded me of this...used to do it and forgot of course. I don't fill it up with tap water though..I save the purified and refill it with that. I know folks who reuse the bottles and it saves a bunch. I also fill them back up a number of times with water I get by the giant jug at those purified water machines. Just don't like the taste of the tap water here - chemicals! whit

I also love cold water. I used to do that with water and also put soft drinks in plastic cup and let it get slushy then eat/drink those. Now since I drink more water during the day I just keep adding ice to my water.
