Are you a deer watcher?

I have lived in the same house all my life. We live out in the country and see a wide variety of animals every day. We can watch the deer from our porch or window and they never fail to amaze me. I find myself watching them from the moment they come out to eat, while they are playing in the field, until they go back in the woods. Why am I so drawn to creatures that I see every day? Do you find yourself doing this? Do you live in an area where you can watch wild animals? If you don't, feel free to respond as well. I would love hear your thoughts as well.

We live near the woods and see a lot of wild animals around us. We are actually in a sub-division and the constant growth around us is forcing many of the animals out of their natural habitat. I have see beaver and wild turkeys come down the street. There are lots of bunnies and chipmunks in our neighborhood. A couple of does come to my front yard regularly to eat and to drink water from my birdbath/fountain. I love to watch them, but do get frustrated when they insist on eating my roses.

I would get frustrated with them eating the roses too. I know they like that. We have wild turkeys too and see them in the field. We've had seagulls here for 3 weeks now because of all the flooding in ohio. They are so confused!

I know, they are so confused. The sounds are driving the dog crazy too. He doesnt know what to think of them.

Wow, I've never seen seagulls this far inland before. In Southern Calif we saw them all the time.

How wonderful! I live in the city, there is no wide life, even bird can not been seen when your are walking outside. Too sad! I want to live in the country and see wide animals every day. How beautiful the life is!

Oh so lovely you can see deer from your window, I see nothing but cars passing by from my window, which is not a good view and I feel it is so annoying. But from my desk in my work place I have the view of a fish pond and also some squirrel that lives on the trees. Sometimes we brought a biscuit for them and watched them eating that biscuit. They are so cute...

I love animals and love to watch them if we can. I live by the woods and go for hikes often and hope to see wood land creatures around. Unfortunately not too many come too close to the house though. My daughter and I are vegetarian but my sons and partner are not. So if any were to come close to the house I would likely yell "run bambi run!" before my men here get them.LOL

I just moved back into the woods/country. I think we will always like to watch some of the critters. I am glad to hear that you still appreciate seeing the wildlife around you. Sometimes it is so easy to forget how wonderful it is when you see it everyday. Easy to let it become commonplace. Even when I lived closer to the city, I would love to get up very early in the morning and listen to the world come to life. First you would hear the birds chirping, then the critters stirring, then the interstate a couple miles away would start it's soft swishing sound. After that, the neighborhood woke up and it just got noisy...lol. But that half hour or so was my favorite time of the day. I hope to get back into getting up early to go sit on my back porch and listen to the rest of the world around me wake up.

I love that time of the day, early morning before the world wakes up. We just built a new deck out back and I cannot wait to sit out there this summer, high up and away from everything and listen to the countryside wake up.

We moved from the city to a large acreage in the woods about 18 months ago. We love watching the deer and all of the wildlife that comes into our yard. We have deer, wild turkeys, opossums, raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks and dozens of varieties of birds. We also have some coyote, although we have not seen them, only heard them yipping or howling at night.

Opassun - Opassum on my tree
The latest wild animal on my property was Opassum. It was walking down from my tree. I was shocked, because the tree is so close from my house. My cat detected it by the window watching it with shaking head, so I new that something is outside. I took some pictures of my house guest. I wish to watch deer playing on my yard.

I envy you, enchantedleppard. I would lose a lot of my day just sitting and watching the deer as you describe. They are such graceful and beautiful animals. I don't think I would ever get tired of watching them even if I saw them out my window every day of my life. Enjoy the beauty!!!

When they appear, most times I'll watch them. As a kid they were interesting, but would flee upon any sign of "formidable" being approaching. Now... they are some bold creatures. They'll park themselves for hours at a time and not even move unless something more dire happens. Or they will just walk away upon the slow approach of others.

I lived in the country most of my life, until I moved here. I absolutely loved watching the wild life. The rabbits, squirrels, deer, even the coyotes. I think that is what I miss most, now that I live in town. However every summer we go up to my father-in-law's cabin in the mountains of New Mexico. The deer actually come up on the back porch and up to the back door. It's truly amazing.

oh I envy you. when I was a kid we used to go to the Black hills and always I saw so many deer and I just loved it. where I am here in Ca we do not ordinarily see deer but we were reallyclose to those horrendous fire storms last fall and we did see some deer come down from the Tustin hills because they had been displaced by the fire. the poor things were scared spitless and running wild on our street. we do see an ocassional possum who comes in at night to raid our garbage can.He looks to be rather old and really plump and waddles away and crawls under our patio fence and I am always afraid he is going to get stuck.lol

I would absolutely love to watch deer. They're suck nervous animals that when I catch a glimpse of one I feel so honoured. I saw a stag with huge antlers in my headlamps the other night, and was elated for the rest of the evening. I don't see many animals close to the house due to the dogs, but I love to sit and listen. If you listen, you can hear the insects buzzing around and it's amazing. The birds here are fabulous in the morning, but in the hot weather when everything else is still, there's nothing better than listing to the part of nature that most people disregard.
