How much would you spend on your pet?

I work in a vet surgery and every day I see people bring their pets in that desperately need urgent treatment. Some people say 'do whatever you have to do, I don't care how much it costs', whereas some people say 'if it's going to cost any more than $_____, we'll opt to euthanase the animal'. I'm curious to know, how much would you be prepared to spend on your pet?

Put it this way. Last year my cat was scratched in the eye by another cat. It tore her cornea & a little bit of claw was imbedded. The local vet said it was too specialised for him to treat, so she went to an animal eye specialist. This took two hours of driving each way, about four times. It cost $1200 for her operation. She fully recovered & the eye is fine now.

I would be prepared to spend whatever it took to save my pet, depending on it's age. Sense has to prevail in this situation. If my pet was very old, I would have to consider very carefully what was best for my animal - not for me. I was in this situation a few years ago. One of our dogs (a shih-tzu called Benji), had a brain tumour and he was only 2 years old. He was paralysed from his neck down. We paid for the costly tests and finally the operation, but had a call from the vet during the op that he was too far gone and they asked for permission to put him to sleep. In all, the costs were well over $2,000 and we still lost him, but I would do it again. If the animal is old, I would have to think seriously about what I am prepared to put my animal through (nothing to do with money); I would have to think what's best for my pet in the long term.

Penny and Benji - This is Penny and Benji, brother and sister. Benji is on the right. We lost him to a brain tumor at the age of 2 but we still have Penny who is now 11.
I forgot to add a photo of Benji - here it is. He is the one on the right - the other one is his sister Penny, who we still have; she is now 11 years old!

i guess it depends on how much and if i had it. if it would take from my kids then i wouldn't but if i had the money and it would help then i would spend it. so i guess yeah if i had $1000 i would say is it gonna cost more then and do it that way. our kids just got a new kitten so i can see my oldest the most getting very close to it and if something was to happen it would hurt him as much as it would me so i would pay what i had to take care of it.

We have a little dog..he is very elderly now....and we would willingly pay for any treatment that he needed as long as it was treatment that was worthwhile dong at his age. We recently had to take him to the vet...and the vet suggested blood tests etc and maybe surgery...but we said as long as he was in no pain...and he was content ..we wouldnt make him undergo any tests or surgery at his age.... It woulnt be right for him

We spent $15k on my cat when he was sick. Even though we were told that there was no known cure for his disease once it was diagnosed, we did the research, talked to the vet and all agreed on a plan of action. The cure cost more once again. But we cared only that our pet did not die unnecessarily. As long as he was not suffering, we wanted to do all we could to ensure he lived out a happy life with us. He is now completely cured! :-) And we are glad we stuck by him and looking back on everything, and if we had to make the choice again, we would gladly do it again.

I have been at that point of decision making many times with cats and dogs. I try my best to understand the condition of the animal, treatment options, quality of life and duration of expected life. All the while, checking my pocket book. I have been fortunate to not have to have a cut off amount or choose between paying for housing vs. a vet bill. Last month, I had a radiation drip treatment done on my cat who is hypothyroid. The medication was lossing effectiveness, he was loosing weight quickly and his liver was effected. I really considered the cost on investing $1500. When I added up the cost of daily medication, quarterly vet visits for blood draws and potential other heath problems, then determined his expected remaining years, it seems worth it. A vet helped me considertion (not the one performing the treatment) If he lives another 3 years in good health, it was a sound investment. I am waiting on this weeks blood draw to get results. I am confident he is a healthier cat alrady as he gained 5 pounds.

P.S. Got a call from the vet today. The blood test results were a success. He will live a quality life until his time comes. Thank you God!

We would pay whatever was needed for his well being. We do have pet insurance and that comes in very handy. I see it as a must. I know my vet in the States did not recommend it but maybe he just didn't want to mess with all the paperwork. There was a time in the States that I couldn't afford the vet bill, but my vet worked with me and I was able to make payments. I chose to have a dog and it is my responsibility to see that he is happy and healthy, no matter what.

Right now, I cannot even afford to take care of myself, healthwise. I would not want to lose my pet, but if I could not afford to do something for them, then I would just have to say no to it. I hate it but I have to think about my family also. My dog is part of the family and he sees the vet every year. That is more than what myself, husband and daughter get right now.

I would pay whatever it cost to save my pet..I would even go into debt to pay if she were sick and needed treatment...My dog and my cat and parrot are part of my family and whatever it cost i am more than willing to pay....My pets depend on me and they need me and i love them and would not let them down in their time of need....

If the surgery is going to fix them and make them well, I'll pay what have to even if I have to make payments to do it. If it's only going to prolong the agony then I'd rather let go and know my pet won't suffer anymore. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I was given 3 options on The Doctor, 2 cost over $2000 and involved him going to A&M University for stays. The other cost under $400, and only was a day or so in the clinic to have a tyroid taken out. I opted for the 3rd and turned out it was the right way to go because the tyroid was a malginant cancer. They called and made sure that the animal she took the tumor out of was a cat since its so rare.

I had a very sad case a number of years ago where I had a dog euthanized. I truly didn't have the thousands it would have taken to get the treatment it needed. It broke my heart, but I felt the right thing was not to let the dog suffer. If I could have in any way come up with the money, I would have. Sometimes the money isn't there. I do know that some people don't believe in spending a lot of money on a pet and I don't know what to say about that.

Hi coffeeshot, I see my pet as one of my family member. So, I don't see how much I am spending. My pet(dog)is with me since last 9 years. Here we have a big Government Vet Hospital, where they treat pets without cost(free) and they give free vaccinations etc. Good Luck.

Well I could only ever spend what I could afford and that was not a lot. When my dog was ill, I spent my last pennies on her to try and get her better, unfortunately there was nothing they could do for her and she had to be put to sleep but I would have paid for treatment for her as long as I could.

I don't want to euthanize my cat ever. I don't believe in that process of any living creature. I believe that everything, be it human or animal can have a full life with a disability. As a result of this I spent $900 on healing my cat last year. He's fine now!

Yikes... what a tough question! My dogs are like my children so I would probably so that the money was limitless. I imagine I would do whatever it took to save them. It's a tough call though because I wouldn't want to make my family, and real kids, broke because I spent all of our money fixing the dog. I guess this would be an instance that pet insurance woould come in handy. I've been thinking of buying it when our pets get a little older. Do you know anything about it?

It really depends on how much money is at stake and if I could pay for it. If it was not going to totally save the animal then I probably wouldn't put the animal through needless suffering whether or not I had the money. If it would save the animals life then that would be a different story.

Yes I would spend what ever it took to make my dog well again, we have insurance now but our last dog was to old for insurance so the vet cost a bit of money now and again for treatment, which we had the money for but if I did not have the money I would get it from somewhere to treat my dog.

I would most likely spend whatever I could to save my dog. I have spent several thousand before to keep my cat alive, and would have spent much more. It's like asking how much you would spend to keep your kid alive. anything possible.
