Remind me. Why are you paying me to do nothing?

My job is slowly eating away at my soul this week. The last 2 days I have had maybe 1 hour of actual work to do. I am here for 6 hours. Even worse, my coworker is out on vacation this week. Actually, that is sort of a good thing because the work I have had to do is about half of what she would normally be doing. The down time probably would not be so bad, but we have been slow for months! This is very not motivating. I keep trying to work on my side work while I am here and I just can not get it done because I feel so drained. Help! I need some motivation!!

I have the same problem you do. I'm a graphic designer for a very small printing company, and I work fast. I can miss three days of work in a row and still be caught up within an hour of returning. I struggled for a while with boredom at work...it made the days drag on and on and on.... but I started bringing books to read. I've read a bunch of the old classics that I've always wanted to read, but never had time...sometimes, if I don't feel like reading, I'll play a game online...or research things online - mostly graphics-related stuff that I don't really know how to do yet - like flash web design and php programming, etc.

Good idea.It is always nice to catch up on your reading when you get such time.

You may be bored, but be thankful you have a job that keeps you on even if it is slow, and not much to do. I'm on medical leave, sprained wrist on the job, and I'm at home because there is no 'light duty' work for me to do, I work for the forestry as a wildland firefighter. Take a book to read, take stationary and write some snailmail, in the day of instant everything, people still like to get mail.

My main issue right now is that I am just done with this job. I have been here almost two years. The management sucks, I haven't gotten a raise in a year, the guys in the back haven't seen a pay increase in five years (not sure to money, the GM doesn't want to give them a raise). The company really should have been closed long before now. I am just holding out until the end of May. I think I am just done with office work. Even though I am going to catch a lot of grief about wasting talents and education, I am probably just going to work for Barnes & noble or something like that.

sometimes i feel like that at my job as well, then other times it is insanely busy. my previous job was definitely like that, so i used to try and think of things to do like clean my desk, clean up the office, dust, stuff like that.

When I first started working here we would get really busy and slow a bit, but nothing like this. I came in at 7:30 and had everything off of my desk for the day by 8am. We have been really slow for over a a year now.

Wow, now here is something you don't hear often, a complaint of having not much to do on the job..Well you have access to a computer? Browse around, there is always something interesting to learn on the information highway..Or for fun, find some games that work your mind, like puzzles, there are many online games like that.

I am getting to the point where I feel chained to the PC. I have 2 books here that I am working on finishing. Maybe this week is just worse because my partner in crime is on vacation LOL When she was out for Christmas week I read a book a day.

sendel when you feel like that just think for a moment what it would be like to have no job and no money coming in and bills to pay then put your priorities in place. be glad that you have a job of any kind even if its not awe inspiring at the moment and if you are really getting tired of your job figure out whether you really want to make a change as a job in hand is better than a job in the bush.

Honestly, if they came in today and said "we are closing down on Friday", my feelings would not be hurt. I only work part time, my income - while useful - is not vital to my families survival. Plus, there are a ton of jobs around here. I can work at Starbucks making $12/hour and get health insurance.

I had a job a bit like that a while ago. At the time I found it really boring and it sort of made me feel as if I wasn't doing anything useful with my time and I didn't feel very good about it. But now when I look back I realise that I was in a really lucky position; getting paid quite well and not having lots of stressful work to do in return. Now that I'm not working, (or rather not doing anything where I get paid) I'm feeling quite wistful about that job, and realising that I actually had it really good, and would quite like to get money for doing nothing now!! It might help you to put the situation more in perspective to think how you'd feel if you didn't have this job. Alternatively, as others have said, you could spend your time doing things like myLot or else look for another job where you would maybe feel a bit more fulfilled. I hope you resolve this situation!

How would I feel if I didn't have a job...more relaxed LOL I would be quite happy not working. I have an over flowing list of thins that I should be doing daily. Being at work is more of a time killer than anything else for me right now. Don't get mew wrong, when I first started working here about 2 years ago, I wanted to work. Now I would rather be home getting my lists done and going to school.

Well, so long as money isn't an issue then you should go for it and do all the things you want to do! Sounds like the obvious answer to me... Good luck, and hope it all works out for you.

i can understand your situation. may be you will like just a little break, not like this. try to leverage yourself by reading online books related to your work. may be you can find some better job.

I would rather be busty and have something to do. We have been on "break" for months!

In that situation I wouldn't complain as long as the downtime isn't affecting my income. I would be more concerned about the business losing money. Is it going to close down anytime soon? If so you better start looking at your other options.

We have been slow for over a year now. The owners don't seem to care as long as we have customers and people bringing items in, which we do. They are bidding on new business and we are doing better than before Christmas, so I assume that they are keeping the place open. Almost everyone here has been looking on and off for new jobs, but that has nothing to do with how slow we are, that has to do with management issues.

You can do one of two things: 1. Bring movies to work and watch on your laptop, or find love for online card games 2. Go to your boss and say you're up for a challenge, say you feel very comfortable with the work you have no but you want to take on something else.

The first one I can't do because I have no sound and can't wear headphones. The second one would be great if there were actually other things to get done. The company is really small. Besides my normal work, I do all the IT stuff. There are no challenges or even extra work to be had. In the front office it is my self, my co-worker and the GM. The GM barely does anything. We handle everything that happens in the office - billing, data entry, inventory, customer service, collections, etc. The only other employees work in the warehouse and they are sitting around with nothing to do as well.

you cannot do anything with your job since you said there is really not much to do around in the office. however, you can find something you love to do,especially online since there are lots to find out there, and use the time to do it. spending more time here at mylot is one activity you might just want to spend more time on. you get to rant, rave, discuss then get paid for it as well.

MyLot during the mornings is soooo slow. I usually MYLot a good bit of the day away, but even this is growing old. Maybe I need to take another month off of MyLot.
