Disappearance of my cat

I have had a very sad week, in that one of my cats totally disappeared. He was here last Sunday and hasn't been back since then. He was neutered and didn't wander at all. And I live a long ways from the road that I live on. So I really don't think he got run over or hit by a car. This is one of the worst things that has happened to me just cause I don't know what happened to him, whether he is dead, shut up somewhere, or hurt somewhere. Have any of you had an animal disappear and never found???

Wow, he came back after 3 weeks. I just don't know where this cat would be locked up.But you have given me a glimmer of hope. I just wish I could figure out what happened to him.

Thanks, nice to know someone who understands what I am going through. I have put a lot of animals to sleep, and that is horrible, but this is much worse.

Oh Margie, I'm so sorry to hear about the disappearance of your cat. It must be terrible for you not knowing where he is or what has happened to him. He is probably still on your property somewhere - I'm just praying that he's not hurt and can't get back home. Have you tried putting notices up around your area? Someone may have found him and not know who he belongs to. I've never had any of my animals disappear, thank goodness, but I feel for you; I would be going frantic. I hope you find him Marge, please let us know.

Abbey, thanks so much for your concern. I have been frantic all week and all I can think about is that fact, if he is hurt somewhere and can't get home. I have walked all around the two neighbors property and haven't found him. The people in this neighbor hood don't pay much attention to animals. If they saw him, they wouldn't pay any attention which is so sad. I just wish I could find out what happened.

Quite a few years ago, my neutered cat Leo ran away when I opened the door. I went outside and called him, but he hissed and growled at me and ran off in a different direction. For two whole weeks, I rode my bike around the local streets calling Leo. Even though I didn't see his body on the road, I worried for his safety. Then someone suggested that I visit the local humane society, which I did. I walked around that distasteful, smelly, hell-like place and was almost about to leave when I passed by a small adjoining room. Curious, I walked inside, looked at the cages, and found Leo!! He threw himself on the cage floor and stuck a paw through the cage. I bought him home after two days and paid dearly for his upkeep, but I was glad to get him back. Your cat may have indeed been shut up somewhere, but probably wound up in a shelter. You should seriously consider visiting the shelters and looking for him. I bet that you will find him! Good luck with your search.

Thanks for that story about your cat and the shelter. I don't think anyone around here would take him to a shelter. That is why I have these cats is because no one feeds their animals here. Or at least they don't feed them very much so they all took up with me. But I will check the shelters just in case. Thanks so much for responding.

I had a cat that used to disappear for weeks at a time and I would think well this time he is gone for good and pretty soon he would show up. If you don't live by a road then no one would have taken him so he may still show up. Think about what you did last Sunday did you go into any sheds or anything that he may have followed you into and you shut the door with him in there? I know it is hard no know where he is. I will keep you in my thoughts and hope he shows up soon. *hugs*

Thanks so much for responding. I have looked at the one shed that I have and he wasn't in there. I asked my neighbor but he is kind of a jerk. I don't think my cat would go into a shed if there were strangers standing around. He was a feral cat so he would pretty much only let me pat him. It is so awful not knowing where he is.

Well, that is really good idea to keep your cats or any other kinds of pets to be outside within the fenced area so that he/she would not disappear at all. I know that some of them disappear for a reason. So if your pet disappears, you should report it to police.

I have heard of cats being gone a long time, months even, and then coming home. Put signs around, put food out for him, call local vets and shelters. Ask your neighbors to keep a lookout for him. I'm so sorry you are going through this.

Thanks for your response. I have talked to the neighbors. I cannot put food out cause I live out in the country, and I would have every skunk, possum and all the raccoons within miles. If he can get home, he will. It is just so frustrating not knowing what happened to him.

I know how terrible you feel - my own cat, Mitzi, went missing three weeks, scared out of our gardens by a dog. We located where she went, someone even took a photograph by mobile, but although we've set up watches and a cat trap from Cat's Protection, she hasn't been seen again - the last sighting was on May 5th, just over a week ago, so she'd survived two weeks before that. I know where you're coming from, the despair, the fear, the tightening of the stomach - I've even lost pounds being unable to eat proper meals. I wish I could say both our cats will be found. I go away for two weeks on Tuesday, though my husband will go on looking. Never have I less wanted to leave my house. Every waking minute I'm obsessing about her, so believe me I understand. I hope your cat turns up safe and well...

Gosh I am really sorry your cat disappeared too. It is just awful, not knowing where they are. It is driving me nuts. I sure hope your cat comes home too. Please keep me posted.

I'm leaving for a trip to the Med on Tuesday, hate the whole thought of leaving the house and Mitzi's companion cat, Dolly, who is pining and very clingy. She'll be miserable with Mitzi and me absent. I'll let you know when I get back, please keep me posted about your own cat. Still can't face much food, ridiculous really, but she's been my 'shadow' for ten years, really bonded. I hope you have good news soon. The not knowing is so undermining.

I am so sorry to hear this I hope you find him. I know what it is like to lose a cat and I don't think I should tell you my story as it may upset you even more, but lets just say I know what it is like to lose a cat in the worst possible way. I hope you find him. We have another cat now, but we were not ready for another cat for a long time after.

Sorry to hear about your cat. I do have 7 other cats, but this particular one was special. Course, they are all special in their own way. It sure isn't any fun losing a cat. Putting them to sleep when they are old or really sick is so much easier.

Hate to say it but if you have coyotes around, could be your poor cat was killed by one. Or maybe someone stole him. Sometimes you never end up knowing which is harder than them dying. My cat, Lightning, disappeared once last year only to resurface under our porch where my hubby spotted him. Something out in the woods got him and he was lying under the porch waiting to die. I bawled my head off when he wasn't outside and didn't come running when I called him like he always did and bawled even more when hubby found him paralyed in his back end. It was hard having him put down but it was best being he was in intense pain. He now lays out back in his final resting place under one of his fave trees that he used to lay under and climb.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your cat. We recently experienced such a loss when our male lab mix was stolen. I certainly hope that God makes sure that people to take other people's pets and people who harm pets get their due!

Gosh sorry to hear about your dog being stolen. That is awful. I don't think anyone could steal this cat cause even I couldn't catch him unless he was eating or just feeling friendly. Thanks for responding.

I sure hope you find your cat. We have a couple of barn cats - one comes and goes between our place and the neighbors - I guess she likes the food both places.

I am awfully sorry to hear all this. Well, I do hope that your cat returns soon. Have you ever reported to police about this? Do you have a picture of your cat? As long as you are sure that your cat did not get hit or anything. I do not know why your cat ran away. I understand that something has happened to him. I never had any pet that disappeared. Well, I hope and pray for the return of your cat. Hopefully he will return. As long as you report all the information. I bet that you miss him so dearly.

I have never had any of my animals disappear either and I guess that is why I am a little nuts over this. I just can't figure out what happened. Thanks for responding and for your prayers. Maybe he will be here in the morning.

My cat would disappear for hours at a time, but she always came back home after a few hours of big game hunting.. I do so hope that nothing has happened to your cat as I know that you will miss her terribly.. Mine would never stay in the house and I really didn't try and make her, she was too fast for me and everytime the door opened whe was out like a shot.. But she did get run over by a car and it nearly broke my heart.. I do hope yours comes draggin home soon..

I hope he comes dragging home too. He also would not stay in the house. He just hated coming indoors. That is why I don't think he is shut up anywhere. Thanks a bunch for your response.

I am so sorry to hear this. Having a pet wander off is very hard. Your cat will come back when it gets hungry enough. I have seen it happen a million times. My roommate's cat wandered off shortly after her parents moved to Alaska. So, your cat is doing just fine, its surprising how smart animals are when they let their instincts take over.
