I hate it. Vehemently. :P I rather have the push kind even though the automatic one may be more hygienic. The reason is that more often than not, I find myself standing like an idiot there, trying to make the sensor recognize my presence. Usually, the water will drip A LITTLE, then stop. I repeat the I-AM-RETARDED-BUT-I-WANT-TO-WASH-MY-HANDS process till I am satisfied - which is actually many whiles later. What about you? Do you like using an automatic tap? Or do you prefer the old-fashioned push kind? Or you don't ever wash your hands? PS.: No offense to those with IQ 75 or below... I am not poking fun at you.

LOL I haven't used automatic taps that often wizzy but I guess I have been lucky as any time I have ever used them they have worked well! I have to say I prefer them to any other taps as they are very environmentally sound - no wasting water with them! xxx

Indeed, they save water. But there is always the but.

Lol, I don't like it when it decides not to work like that. One time I reached for the handle that wasn't there O_O (The horror!) When they malfunction they waste water and force people to walk around with soapy hands...the joy! Like it was so hard to wash your hands manually lol

OMG, malfunction? I guess I am fortunate that it didn't happen to me before - ALL the taps malfunctioning.

We do not get to see many in our country but occasionally in big hotels you can find it. Besides there is a local temple where we get to use automatic tap. I liked the idea as it saves water besides being hygienic. But you have to wait sometime to make the sensor detect your presence. That may not be a great experience particularly if you are in a hurry.

We have those in some public toilets. They are quite "random" to me since how posh the place is seems to have no link over here.

I dislike the automatic taps. They are bothersome and annoying because they never really work just right. Either they won't work at all or they just over work. I much prefer the old fashioned taps.

I much prefer either the push or turn type. The metered push kind are sometimes more irritating than the automatic ones because if its set too quick after you push it it shuts off before you can get your hands under it......gggggrrrrr

I like the old fashion, turn it on by hand types. I can't stand the sensor ones either. Nor do I care for the sensor toilets as they always scare the crap out of me.

I hate them as I never seem to be able to set it off for more than a second or two. I love watching the people standing running their hands back and forth trying to get the sensor to recognize their presence. I have even heard some yell at it. Like that works any better. I just leave my hands at the sensors eye level and wait. It starts up again shortly after the first few drops drip free. Great to people watch in the casino bathroom with these sensors on the taps. Too funny. Thanks for a good laugh today also Wiz! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Same here, Grandpa Bob. I really don't know if those designers are overzealous in saving water. If yelling works, I would have unloaded my list of choice swear words.

I've only encountered these things in Airports so far-I don't have a problem with the taps, but I DO have a problem with those Automatic air hand dryers that go along with them! You can't keep your hands IN the airstream to dry them without the thing switching off,so it's like You have to Hand Jive all the time til You're done! grrr!

then you get the 2 extremes-the one that's so feeble, you'd be quicker blowing on your hands yourself,or the one that's like a wind tunnel and you're watching the skin on your hands ripple!

Oh yes, that will be another gripe of mine! They can be quite insensitive and the time they blow is so short - my hands aren't even dry!

i don't mind them when they're at public venues or restaurants,i probably wouldn't want to touch a faucet there anyway..but at home i prefer the old kind. if i had those installed,my cats would most likely trigger them all day.

The ONLY reason I prefer the automatic ones is hygeine reasons. With the push button or fawcet, the person before me touched it already and YUCK!! it's dirty because they haven't washed their hands yet, which is understandable because they need to turn the water on first so I'll turn it on and clean the button or fawcet with soap and water before turning it off so it won't get my hands dirty again. I'll even grab a towel to open the door. Heck, I don't even use the first piece of toilet paper because the person before me probably wiped and went for more... ewwww!! I'll throw the first part into the toilet then grab what ever I need. There's just too many diseases out there now a days that one can't be too careful.

You've seen the hospital type taps with the levers? What's wrong with them? They're designed so that Docs can scrub up and use their elbows to turn the tap off-no hands!
• Singapore

tsk tsk - You are in the running for best response!
Yup, hygiene... so it is a give and take thingy... if only the automatic ones work better - then I would love them.

haha i get what you mean by standing there like an idiot. it has happened to me a few times and once, i even felt i was turning into a red tomato as the sensor couldn't identify me. grins but rather than push also, i'd prefer the turning tap. the one where you turn thus you have control of the water as well and won't waste water. you also don't have to keep pushing it.

And sometimes, it is a bit embarrassing when the person next to you seems to be having no problem lol.

lordwarwizard I also hate automatic taps with a passion. I feel like an idiot as I wait for the sensor to pick up and like you I will get a little drip then it stops arrgh and this goes on for a while until I get enough water to actually wash my hands. i would rather have the old fashioned kind that You can actually get a flow of water going with which to wash your hands.

I think they are improving the sensors, as I have not had to do the "dumb look" thing for awhile. It is like, I really enjoy them when they work. I did wonder if the fact that it did not start for me meant that I was "wasting away" and losing too much weight.

Yeah, here in Finland most of the automatic taps are serious waste of time. I usually go mad because the stupid tap just wont work. I shake my hand there like an idiot to the censor but nothing happens.. Then after finally it starts to give water out the tap finishes and you need to reactive it again. So in conclusion i really prefer the normal taps. :)

Hahaha... this is what I like about you, making your topics fun to read. Anyway, here in the Philippines automatic tap are rare or not that widely use. Automatic tap even automatic flash for me are so irritating to use like other say it hardly get your presence and you have to do much movement just for it to realize...oh someones needs me". Still prefer the old fashion and will always be the best one to use cause the control is in your hands and not from those damn automatic sensor.

I don't mind them at all. Yeah, sometimes they don't seem to work, I just move to a different sink. Or do the idiot dance of waving my hands around until I can get it to work. It's better than not washing your hands at all!

I am okay with them, and lately more and more shopping centres are using these gadgets. I think it's to make their toilets more atas or look more modern. I think they are definitely more hygenic, but sometimes they don't work well, and then the sink gets dirty because the water doesn't flow and debris gets stuck there. Side-tracking a little I really like those wash basins that are slanted down like little troughs. i think they look really funky and make good use of gravity.

They are very practical, if you don't have kids! Imagine in the middle of winter not having to have your hand stuck to the icy tap first thing in the morning! Or having to worry about leaving soap on your taps! Hospitals these days are using them, and they are much better. Less water wastage etc. Oh, they are a pain on trains though, especially when you are trying to hang on going around a corner. Like with anything in life, there are good and bad things about automatic taps.
