With summer arriving so are the yard sales and garage sales. Ppl haul all their unwanted items out to the yard or garage, slap a price tag on them and wait for ppl to show up and buy them…and ppl do. Outgrown clothes, toys, books, dishes, linens, appliances, just about anything you can think of. Some ppl but very high prices on their things b/c they want to make as much as they can and others just put a few cents just to get rid of the stuff. Rich neighborhoods tend to have high dollar items for very little money although there are exceptions to that rule. Personally when I have a yard sale, I just want to get rid of the stuff. I don’t want to have to haul it back inside again. The money mostly just goes to fill a piggy bank so what I make off it isn’t that big of an issue. I love going to yard sales and garage sales b/c you never know what great deals your going to find. It reminds me of a woman that went on Antique Roadshow with a small table she’d bought at a yard sale for $20 and then found out that the table was worth over $100,000 Now that is a deal!! Do you like yard sales or garage sales? When you have one, is it to get rid of the stuff or to make big bucks? What’s the best deal you’ve ever found? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

For me life wouldn't be worth living without yard sales. The list of deals I have gotten is way too long to put here. I like to look for old things that I can resell but I have gotten many nice household goods at sales as well as at Thrift stores, auctions and flea markets.

I put things our cheap, that way it leaves. I don't carry it back in the house, I just load them up and take it to Goodwill.

Our church had their annual yard sale recently. We didn't make as much as we usually do and we have been trying to figure out why. I think that we didn't get as many good donations to sell this year, maybe because people hadn't accumulated as much since the last sale and didn't have as much to get rid of. It was a LOT of work. We made about $700 and I'm not sure it was worth the effort. Of course, that is $700 we didn't have before. But if we are going to put that much effort into it again we need to work smarter. I'm no longer physically able to have a sale on my own. But when I did it was to get rid of things as well as to get the money. I'd start out with reasonable prices and as the day wore on I'd sell them for less so I wouldn't have to haul the stuff back inside or off to a donation collection box. I used to love going to the sales. But at this point in my life I'm not accumulating things but trying to get rid of things. When my kids were small it was a great way to get what they needed at a price I could afford. I do have one thing I bought years ago at a sale. It is a leather checkbook cover that is handsome and has lasted and lasted. But I've never really bought any really valuable item. I watch antiques roadshow and dream of someday discovering that something I have is worth a fortune and it will set me up financially! LOL

Garage sales are huge around here. If I had a garage, I'd be having one every year! The last time I had a garage sale, I just the leftovers up for grabs on freecycle. I gave away a little tykes slide to a very happy little girl and I gave away 2 desks to a mom who home schools. I don't mind giving away my stuff to someone who will genuinely appreciate it! When I go garage sale-ing, I usually look for baby clothes in very good condition that I can turn around on ebay. I also look for antique looking things. You just never know what you might find.

The best value I ever found was an encyclopedia set that contained what the authors regarded as equivalent to a four-year college course. I was in my 3rd year of high school when I found it and I read all 26 volumes before entering college. It cost $5 and probably saved me hundred in books I didn't have to buy a few years later. At that point in my life it was a choice between buying books and eating. I usually bought the books.

I love garage and yard sales. I have never had one myself but have gone to a few. I bought two captains chairs and an old oak antique desk chair for twenty dollars and an endtable for five and these were all solid wood. I think i got a real bargain there as these were really first name furniture.if I did have a garage sale it would be to get rid of unwanted junk not to make a lot of money.

I love yard sales and sadly I haven't even been to one this year but I have passed several. With money so tight and bills due we have to keep what little we have for them and the things we seriously need. When I have a yard sale I price lowly usually 25¢ to 50¢. My sister in law prices her really high then goes down a little to make them think they are getting a good deal and they buy into that who haggle thing. I have even let all the stuff go cheap at a set price to get rid of it and not have to haul it back up my steep hill and into the house especially sincce I just cleaned it up getting rid of it.. Also another good reason to have a Goodwill or Salvation Army. And ebay would be a good place eto sell items. best deal..Books usually for a small fraction of their cost..love reading books.

I have lots of sales, and I used to do it to get rid of stuff from my own house. The last few years, though, I have been buying abandoned self-storage units and selling the contents at yard sales, so I do it to make money now. I still set my prices very reasonably, because I'd rather get a quarter for something and sell it, rather than put a dollar on it and have to pack it back up again when it doesn't sell! Those quarters add up eventually! I really hate going to sales where the people put high prices on everything. Yeah, it might be nice stuff, but it's still used! I also like going to sales and picking stuff up for a few cents that I can sell later on ebay for big bucks! You can often pick up depression glass and other collectible glassware and pottery for almost nothing. I paid $1 for a piece of Roseville pottery once and sold it on ebay for $32.

I've never heard of buying abandoned self storage units. How do you do it? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Most of the storage unit places will hold an auction day where you go and bid on abandoned storage units(or people who are 4-5 months behind on their bill). Other's won't put the units up for auction, you just go in and it's a silent bidding, meaning a sheet in the main office where you put your highest bid that you are willing to pay, and you may or may not get it, depending on if someone outbids you. For either method, just call or go by the storage unit places in your area and ask what method they use for getting rid of abandoned storage units. Most will either have a list of contents or will let you peek inside the unit(but not go digging around). Some are also blind sales. Be careful of these, especially if the owner is a business as some use storage units as a records storage facility and you will end up with a bunch of useless papers(not to mention HIPPA law violations). Good luck if you choose to use this method, it's actually a fairly good way to make a profit. I tend to list my larger stuff on craigslist so I don't have to deal with moving it. I also start by listing the smaller stuff on craigslist and if it doesn't sell, I put it in my Ebay store and let it sit there until someone buys it or I get sick of having it around and take it to goodwill.

I had a street sale a few weeks ago, and all I wanted to do was get rid of stuff I didn't want anymore. Even though that was the goal, there was stuff I didn't let go for nothing. You know, the stuff that is brand new in the box, people offer you a nickel, I don't think so. So, I brought that stuff in, and will try to sell on Ebay or Kijiji. I try not to go to them, I really don't want any more stuff in the house. The other stuff that didn't sell went right to Goodwill, hopefully someone can use it.

I like going to yard sales, but I've never had one of my own. One of the best deals I've ever gotten at a yard sale was probably an old book. I bought a box of children's books while I was pregnant with my son. Some of them were practically brand new. There were about 20-30 in the box, and I paid $5. In the very bottom of the box was a really old copy of Little Red Riding Hood. I gave all the information to a guy I know whose father runs an old bookstore that specializes in rare and antique books. His dad called me back and offered me $250 for the book!

Wow...that's a great deal. I love finding deals. I bet if the woman knew she'd be kicking herself in the butt though. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I LOVE going to yard sales and garage sales. We get up early on Saturday have the paper ready and be off. Most of the time I think its good family time and the kids get to see things that they don't see in our area. I do agree with you on the prices. When I do have a yard sale I price so I can get rid of the things. Sometimes I let the buyer give me a price and if its too high and I know its not worth that amount I'll go lower. My kids also love to be out there with me when I do my yard sales. The most valualbe thing I brought from a yard sale was a 10k gold ring for 5cents. It was so pretty it had a yellow stone in it. I took it to a jewerly store and they told me the karats and what it was worth. I thought that was the best 5cents I ever invested. I was a little girl when I purchased that ring and it was for my mom for Mother's Day. But since I've been grown I've find get deals. I purchased a 3pc livingroom coffe table and 2 end tables for $20 and they are made out of wood with glass tops

i do both. we had one last weekend and now i remember why i dont like having them! everyone wants something for nothing! most of these people dont want to pay anything for the stuff you have for sale and i find that certain people groups only offer you like 5 cents on stuff that you have marked for $3! i do love going to garage sales and like to find unusual things that are there

lol Your gonna love my response, twoey. We don't techincally go to yard/garage sales. Instead, we shop the night b4 garbage day for deals if ya know what I mean. We get quite a haul sometimes and make money off it being we put reasonable prices on the stuff. If they need cleaning, they get cleaned. Fixing, they get fixed if we can. Otherwise, they go to the scrap yard for cash. I get a real kick out of ppl coming to our yard sale and buying stuff they originally threw away cause they were either broke or filthy. lol Never had to buy a push mower to cut our grass. We find enough in the garbages to put a couple together and they run like new for several years.

Sounds like you have a good deal going on there. It's sad that ppl would rather throw something out then clean it but I've seen it as well. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I am right in the middle of getting ready for a garage sale and I put low prices on stuff to just get rid of the stuff! I hate having garage sales. I would rather go to them. I don't have one thinking about the money I can make. I have one thinking about cleaning out the house. This year the town is having a garage sale so I am joining it that one. Most of my things are priced 25 cents.

I love going to yard and garage sales, but normally don't ever find anything real good. I very rarely have one either, but when I do, it's just to get rid of things not for making big bucks.

I go to yard sales and estate sales all the time. Most of the best stuff seems to turn up at auctions where the prices are higher but I have gotten some nice stuff at garage and house sales. I once bought a piece of Glidden (Rams head mark) pottery for 50 cents and sold it for $450. I've also gotten some nice first printings of books that have sold in the $100-500 range and a gorgeous beaded bag with swans and a castle that cost me $20 and sold for $700. But these dels have been spread over ten years and there hasn't been anything great lately. The deals are fairly few and far between but you never know, and looking is half of the fun.

When I have a yard sale I want to do both. LOL I want to get rid of stuff and make big bucks. But, it seems that what sells the most is kids stuff and I don't have any of that. So I have never made big bucks at any yard sale I have had. I don't think I have ever made over $100.

I have never been good at garage sales, but I do like to see what is being offered at other people's garage sales! There is going to be a free market style event at the park this Saturday! It is even better than garage sailing!
